So what kind of battery life would generally be expected from this flashlight. I know that it would vary depending on the battery, but lets say for the recommended 14500

s.walkerThis flashlight is identical to the Astrolux SC (drop https://www.massdrop.com/buy/astrolux-sc-copper) except this one is made out of aluminum and the SC out of copper, so battery life should be similar. One of the commenters there has some runtime guess: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/astrolux-sc-copper/talk/448489
This one might throttle down the brightness a bit quicker due to temperature, leading to a slightly longer runtime (and lower average output).

@Massdrop really needs to improve on the product descriptions page.
1. The weight is not 236 gm. That is the weight for the copper version. As another poster pointed out, this aluminium version is only 78 gm.
2. It should be highlighted that the 8 brightness mode is the maximum number of mode. The Bistro firmware designed by ToyKeeper of BLF allows users to specify the brightness modes for this light, from 1 to 8 as show below. All figures are in lumens
1 -- 1400 lm 2 -- 5, 1400 3 -- 5, 293, 1400 4 -- 5, 135, 543, 1400 5 -- 5, 79, 293, 688, 1400 6 -- 5, 54, 178, 419, 813, 1400 7 -- 5, 47, 135, 293, 543, 858, 1400 8 -- 5, 35, 99, 213, 365, 613, 953, 1400
There is also moonlight/firefly option with sub-lumen brightness that user can enable or disable, and to include in the mode option.
3. Due to high current needed when running this light on Turbo, it is recommended to use high drain IMR 14500 (non-protected) in this battery.

AkhyarOn #3:
- it's better to use actual current ratings instead of trying to use cell chemistry as an indicator - I can't find any references for the Astrolux S3's actual current use. Is it noted somewhere that I haven't located?

HookThis is a rather comprehensive review of the copper version (internally the same except just different hosts) of this light over at BLF. The reviewer recorded 4.4A current draw when running Turbo mode. http://budgetlightforum.com/node/46120
There are many more users impression over at BLF and one member recorded 4.6A when using purple Efest 14500

Does it really weigh in at 236 grams? Seems a bit heavy for a light taking a 14500 in aluminium, no?

8 modes you have to switch through every time you want a specific mode!?! This seems like the mode options available on Chinese Cree Q5 lights from 10 years ago. Why 8 modes!?

Not so bad when you have a chart:

I just got a S3 the other day and it is pretty easy to use. Most of the modes are hidden and you won't run into say strobe unless you actually want to.

SodaAntThat is the wrong chart for this flashlight as it shows the diagram for BLF A6 driver. This flashlight uses the newer BLF A17 DDL driver that utilises ToyKeeper's Bistro firmware.
