I've read comments/reviews for about an hour and I'm not finding my answer. Sorry if it has been asked before...
I purchased the first generation Aune T1 offered on Massdrop back in 2014. Is it worth upgrading to this newer model? What will I gain? I've read there may be better USB DAC options for my setup, but the tube is pretty darn cool for the warm sound, and in all honesty I like the aesthetics. I've always wanted to roll tubes, but have also read it doesn't make much difference on the first gen so haven't bothered.
I currently use the T1 purely as a USB DAC from my office workstation which then runs to my amp via RCA. This drop's price is definitely worth considering if there are benefits, as are other potential recommendations. I do not currently use headphones but am always considering getting some.
I'm rebuilding my office right now so it's a great opportunity to upgrade before rewiring the room. Other recommendations are appreciated.
I am a tinkerer by trade, so opening and modding options are also of interest.
Thank you.

infosecgurusThe new one can accept DSD 2.8 (DoP ?) and go up to 24/192... you will not hear much difference,, got a modicum of patience and able to "tinker" you say... well bang for just a few bucks, is upgrade the caps and get a nice NOS tube, or two, you will hear what this 'sleeper' is truly capable of. All manufacturers cut corners on mass marketed items... somewhere,, and larger, performance, more $$ caps, are usually the first to go...
I Just got a used one today, to do just this, to my third now.
Worst case, you fry the thing,,, you can buy a new one for $164.99... and try again;) my last one was made far easier fitting the larger caps in, by moving some smaller ones to the top of the board "tube-side", now it's "In like Flint"...

rastusThat's kind of what I was wondering, if it was just better to upgrade miscellaneous components in the one I already have. Do you have a recommendation for specific caps? I have replaced plenty of caps in my time. I know there is a plethora of information out there on tubes, but if you have any particulars to recommend I'm all ears. I have tendency to research for so long that my eyes cross, and sometimes it's just easier to ask... what parts do you think are best.

If you really want to go ahead, I can post the parts from Digi-Key, and other links to instructions/guidelines.

infosecgurusRastus, I am hoping you may have an idea on the following... It's 2 months later and I passed on this drop with plans to tinker after our chat. I haven't started yet , but it is definitely time. Over the past few weeks random static & light crackles have been increasing in frequency & strength out of the right channel / speaker. After extended troubleshooting it is definitely coming from my 1st gen Aune T1. (Without USB or a source connected, it is passing the interference on to my amp. It stops immediately when unplugged from the amp. And the issue swaps to the opposite channel / speaker when I switch RCAs on the amp side. All leading to it originating from the DAC). I've opened it up thinking it might be a cap (yet read they cause different symptoms) or something obvious like a loose connection. However I cannot find a thing. It's been getting worse each day to the point of worrying it might damage a speaker, so I've removed it from the loop completely. My last thought is the power block, but I wouldn't even know where to start there. Both DAC & AMP are plugged into the same circuit. Any thoughts? Have you come across this or heard of anyone else experiencing the same? I'm not finding much discussion about similar issues, especially when USB is disconnected since many recommended swapping cables or the probability of motherboard fluctuations. Thanks!
