The solder you use matters at least as much as the iron. Get yourself some good rosin core solder. Under no circumstances should you solder without rosin/flux! It's a horrible pain and no fun, while good quality solder with flux makes the entire experience actually enjoyable.

Kester 44 is what I use, and it seems borderline psychic in how it flows exactly where I want it to go (no referrer link, just sharing):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068IJX6

The EEVBlog has a fantastic soldering tutorial series on YouTube, easily the best I've seen:
andy@andy

There's a HUGE difference between a Rat Shack soldering iron and even a low end Hakko/Weller soldering station. The station will be much, much easier to use, more predictable, faster to get ready, and more stable in use. A project the size of the Crack is just long enough to justify spending the money to get a soldering station and, hey, it's not like you'll stop building kits after you discover just how much more you can get for your money in kit form.

A soldering station GB would probably be a good thing for people who don't already have one, especially if you guys plan to work with Bottlehead again in the future.

williatyOh I agree, the difference between RatShack and Weller/Hakko is night and day. But if @del316 wants to wait for a GB before he builds his Crack and the price is stopping him, he should just go and pick up a RatShack soldering iron. Just be careful.

The YouTube videos below are excellent for any beginner or if you're near a TechShop/hackerspace, they should have free/close to free classes on soldering or I'm sure a member would be more than willing to help you put your kit together and you would have access to the Weller/Hakko brands.

andyI don't see any options here for the bottlehead badge, is that going to be included?

aj-kun@aj-kun and everyone else. I spoke with DocB regarding the Bottlehead badge. We've included it as an option during checkout for $6, you can read more about it here: http://www.bottlehead.com/store.php/products/bottlehead-badge

If you already placed an order and would like it added on, please let us know via support@massdrop.com. However, if we do get 100 units sold, then we will waive the cost of the badge and anyone who chose it during checkout/emailed us will get it for free.

You can only qualify for the free badge if you ask for it during checkout or you email us AND we hit 100 units sold.

Cheers!

#massdropinception

Edit: no need to email support, per harryc, if you mouse over your profile pic on top, you can go to "My Transactions" and edit your order, if you would like the Bottlehead sticker. Sorry for the confusion.

andy@andy Do we have to email support or can we just edit the order in the transaction history? Mine already seemed to have the badge added (which is exactly what I want).
