A collaboration with knifemaker Andrew Demko, the AD-15 sets a new bar for production folders. Equipped with Demko’s new Scorpion lock, a modified version of a traditional lockback, the knife is addictive to open and close, and as secure as they come Read More
I was interested on the AD-15 for a very long time but was wary of a known defect on some AD-15 blade tang and pin. I know that the new version has this defect corrected, so I quickly ordered one when they appeared on Drop.
When my knife arrived, I immediately noticed a chip on the blade. The chip can be seen with the naked eye, and you can feel it when you cut some paper with it. It is not a deal breaker as I can sharpen it out, and the AD-15 is meant to be a work horse and not a gentleman knife, but it is still a disappointment coming from Drop and the Cold Steel factory. This problem is reflected in the final note.
The knife itself is build like a tank and as soon as you grip the knife, you already know that the scorpion lock is a very solid lock, on par with the Demko Tri-ad lock. The action is very stiff for the moment and I cannot close the knife with one hand, but it may get better with some time (it runs on some dual PB and teflon washers).
My AD-15 will definitely be a user and except for the blade chip, the fit and finish is good.
i like the design on the knife and construction is quite good but my only problem for not giving it 5 stars is that the action could be a bit smoother and the corner of the jimping on the spine could have been rounded a bit so it's not so sharp
Another Cold Steel beast with a lot of cool factor
Cold Steel makes "over-the-top" the norm. There is a high quality to price ratio that always makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth. But more importantly, they make sharp things fun and fun things sharp. I love the heft of the Demko series. No doubt, the AD-15's Scorpion lock is unique, interesting, and fun to play with.
That being said, I'm a bigger fan of it's brother, the AD-10, which is a little bit bigger and badder (but not quite as big and bad as its big, bad daddy- the 4 Max Scout). While not as flashy as the AD-15 and its fancy Scorpion mechanism, it has the trusty, reliably tough and proven Demko Tri-Ad lock.
To be sure, both are equally tough folders that feel really good in the hand. And they're just so damn much fun to use. They compare nicely, but are just different enough to give any knife collector an excuse to get both!
Well made and sturdy but harder to open then I like
Takes alot of effort to open it, have to push had on the thumb stud to initiate opening. Wish they made top front of scorpian lock flare out with G10 so you could push up with your thumb to release the blade
Excellent hard work folder. Came sharp, centered up, fit & finish are great. Still a very good value for what it provides.
I have two minor issues with the knife. First, the G10 is very grippy and there isn't a smoothed-out spot under the clip, so it's going to start tearing up your pants pocket right away.
The second relates to the nature of the Scorpion Lock, in which the lockbar pops back into the palm of your hand when opening as the stop pin rides along the blade tang. It's difficult to open the knife quickly with a thumb flick, at least in my case, because if your palm is contacting the lockbar, it puts pressure on the blade tang and slows it down. For a good quick flick, you need to hold the knife somewhat awkwardly up in your fingers to avoid squeezing the lockbar. I've also tried the old "compression lock" trick by opening the lockbar with my fingers and then wrist-flicking the blade out. But due to the nature of the Scorpion Lock, the lockbar and stop pin are fully out of the way when you're disengaging. So it's actually possible to over-travel the blade beyond the stop pin and miss the lockup, "over-opening" the knife. I've found that slow-rolling the blade open works the best. For closing, the action is great and it's easy to pull back on the Scorpion Lock and shake the blade shut.
