My very first fountain pen was a Lamy Al-Star, and this pen is my first real upgrade from that initial purchase. I loved my Lamy for a lot of reasons: the weight, the size, the nib (a bit wet but otherwise a very smooth writer), the price... it really is a very nice, entry-level fountain pen. The Diplomat is now my second fountain pen, and it is without a doubt an upgrade. For reference, I bought the matte orange colourway with a fine, stainless steel nib, and it serves as my daily driver. Starting with the writing experience, I love the size and weight of this pen. Now, to be clear, I do not post my fountain pens; with the Lamy, I find the pen simply too unwieldy, and so I never got into the habit. The same is true with my Diplomat, and I feel this pen is the perfect size for people who don't post when they write. The weight and balance are excellent as well, as it definitely feels substantial without being fatiguing. As for the nib, it came very nicely tuned out of the box. With one of the Diamine anniversary inks, it's a very smooth writer, and not nearly as wet as the Lamy. Regarding the design itself, I absolutely love the unique, airship inspired look. Not only is it visually striking, it also has real utility, as the groves on the body of the pen definitely help with grip. The section also has a nice, very slightly rough finish that also aids in grip while preserving the matte appearance of the pen. The precision machining on this pen is also top notch. The threading on the barrel is very nice, screwing and unscrewing extremely smoothly But the real standout on this pen, in my opinion, is the cap, which goes on with an extremely satisfying click that never fails to impress, with a perfect alignment between cap and barrel. The attention to detail, here, is top notch. The Diplomat accent on the nib and pen cap are both subtle but attractive, and unlike other reviews I've seen, the entire pen shows very little signs of wear, despite some real abuse (it goes with me everywhere). About my only complaints regarding this pen are: first, the cap fit does appear a bit loose now, months after the original purchase. It still fits very well, though, so this is a relatively minor quibble. Additionally, the clip has also become just a little loose over time. But again, it's minor. Overall, if you couldn't tell: I really love this pen!

Disclaimer: this is a review of my purchase at Massdrop. Issues: 1) The original projected delivery date was Dec 14, 2018--I just received my pen (even as other drops of different colors were being shipped during this delay of a month); 2) I opened the packaged pen and saw that there was blue ink on the nib ... when I subsequently unscrewed the pen, I saw that the converter still had ink in it. I've purchased many fountain pens (in store and online) before and I've never received a pen that still had ink in the converter. 3) Which reminded me of other issues I've encountered when purchasing writing instruments via Massdrop. I had to return 3 other pens due to cosmetic blemishes--all leading me to think that some (all?) of the products that are shipped are B-stock, or plain used items ... 4) Circling back to 1, it's extremely frustrating to wait a month to receive something that is not new.

The best-writing fountain pen I've ever owned. Great choice for everyday use (and carry; this is one tough pen). Truly a joy to use this pen on a Rhodia notebook!

A gem of a pen. A rare design that nails both form and function. And Massdrop offer it at a price no one else does.
