I couldn't wait to receive the ALT Signature. When I did I used my own cable, which did not light the LEDs. I was so disappointed. But then I changed the cable and Boom, LEDs working fine, keyboard working fine, and I am totally in love with the colors and the keycaps.
Superb Keeb is Now Daily Driver but Canvas Caps Appear to be Defective
I had been eyeing both the Drop Alt High-Profile and the Drop+MiTo Canvas caps for sometime when 'The Captain' released so seeing them bundled along with the unique darker space-grey case color convinced me to snag one day 1. I was also interested in trying out Halo Trues and my concerns regarding the prior issues I had seen reported with stabs/lubing associated with previous releases of the DropALT were assuaged by discussion posts giving assurances those issues had been ameliorated on the Signature Series boards. Those assurances appear to have been genuine as the stabs/lubing both seemed ideal to me on arrival.
Initial impressions of the keeb were super positive; while first handling the board I found it has a very appealing heft to it. The comforting weightiness and high quality color finish afford 'The Captain' a real premium feel. No rattling loose parts or wobbly keys and switches were devoid of springy or scratchyness w/ actuation. Typing on the marshmallowy XDA profile caps w/ lubed Halo Trues immediately delighted.
I came across the only disappointments with the board when first plugging it in. The default profile 1 Rainbow RGB and light bar pop on and immediately notice partial shine-through the Canvas caps, each with it's own smattering Jackson Pollock of light dots. I'm still new to learning about the different manufacturing processes used in keycap production but it appears something went wrong along the way. From what I can tell something went wrong during or after the caps were cast/cured/etc. and as a result the caps have inconsistent thickness/density spots. Could be caused by tiny air bubbles during casting I imagine. Whatever caused them to come out that way the result is they look terrible and cheap with any kind of back-lighting.
A bit disappointed with the defective Canvas caps given the price but considering the caps still look great sans lighting I opted to swap them out for my EnjoyPBT Sushi caps and put the Canvas caps on my Pok3r/Datamancer 60% so I'm still happy. Not a major issue for me and I never even considered requesting to RMA I've been enjoying the board too much to separate from it. I think that speaks for itself.
Dark concrete like color, nice! Must admit keycaps compliment it quite well, which I was not expecting. I am having second thoughts about changing them, they look good.
Good keyboard, very solid and well-built. Mapping the keys was fairly easy, and looks great. Only qualm with it is that the space bar and larger keys are a bit rattle-y, and that when typing with force, you can hear a high pitched “spring” noise.
Was looking into more premium keyboards after using Razer, Logitech and Ducky boards. Im glad I went for this one because it feel premium and has a clean look to compliment my desk. Pretty good build out of the box but you can definitely customize it to suit your needs.
Fantastic keyboard! (After lubing switches and changing stabilizers).
I love the high profile design and layout that includes arrow keys. The color and finish of the case is amazing and honestly a primary reason why I chose this "Icon" version of the ALT, but the keycaps also drew me to it as well.
At the time of buying this, there was no barebones kit that included this gorgeous space/dark grey color, hence this being my choice.
My only cons would be the stabilizers really need to be changed and the power needed for this thing is far more than most boards. So much so that these boards are specifically mentioned as a warning from coiled cable makers to consider cable length. It created a challenge for me using a KVM switch too so I eventually got one that was powered to give the board the power it requires. If the total connection length is too long the keyboard might still work, but LEDs won't and will remain off.
(PLEASE consider your setup and what connection length you'll have)
RGB is pretty good with some nice built-in configurations, but I specifically wanted this board for the side lighting and it's a little disappointing. The LED array is pretty spaced out and the diffusion is not good so you can clearly see individual LEDs.
I had dealt with prebuilt stuff like Razer keyboards for a while, but really wanted to jump into custom mechanical keyboards. I did a bunch of research learning the hobby, but got stuck with the impatience of delivery times for parts, etc. I was happy to see a package like this existed that offered all the same concepts and similar customizability for what mattered to me;
-Hotswap board for trying different switches
-Some RGB lighting so I can follow my desk theme
-Minimalism and great build quality
I bought it for my girlfriend for her birthday. I was really anxious before I gave it to her because she is not a geek and was not into keyboards. But when she saw the keyboard she immediately liked it! she loves the Bauhaus look and the RGB lightning, and now all day long I hear her clickity-clack!
