Just got my pair. Very mild bubble marks that I haven't yet tried to buff out (wanted to listen ASAP), and there is a gap between the cups and the frame, but maybe that's intentional? Someone made the comment that these don't look like the photographs, and to me that's correct -they look so much better. The purple is much darker, and the overall construction and appearance (other than the bubble wrap issue) is much better in person. I don't think they look like a $1000 pair of headphones, but they certainly look more expensive than $450.
I'm not a card carrying audiophile, so forgive if my terminology or descriptions aren't great.
Listening to So What from Miles Davis Kind of Blue 24/192. The bass is really impressive, and I'm talking about the instrument in this case, because it's like I can feel it. On a range of other styles (for the limited time I've been listening) the bass definitely has a punch, but at least in a few songs I'm getting more sibilance from cymbals than I'm used to with my Hifiman HE400s that are my daily pair for everything at home. However, the sound is way more PRESENT and in your face with the PHs and I find myself so far constantly adjusting the volume as my ears are feeling a bit fatigued. I also had a headache before listening to these and I think that's the problem.
I think I like the overall sound of these better than my HE400s (which I was concerned about) or HD598 (which I like a bit better on some more acoustic/classical instrument songs). I think these would be great for gaming and movies too, but haven't tried that yet. Sound placement is great too, surprisingly so for me as I have some issues with that since my left ear isn't as good as my right and it's just enough that some headphones sound way too right balanced to me, and sound direction/placement gets a bit screwed up.
In a nutshell, I'm relieved. I'll definitely be keeping these headphones. They're fun. Too bad the rest of the purchase experience wasn't on par. Had Massdrop/Fostex had better quality control, shipping, and communication, this would have been great. Oh, and removable cables because seriously any headphone over $150 should have that. I'm going to be jealous when a later revision of these drop with all the kinks worked out.
