I've got a 2597, great little unit. Did have an error with corrupt map data after the initial update, but seems to be working fine now. The Smartlink is great for those mobile speed camera zones. A little annoying you can't disable alerts individually. Only global. Snappy interface and very quick to find satellites without cell tower trickery. I use a standalone GPS as I can leave it in the car and my phone in my pocket while I make a stop. While being easy to move between my car and company cars and retain all my favourites.

Does it work as a dash cam too? Why the camera on the front? If it operates as a dashcam as well, that would kind of be awesome

EchobreakerThat's a good question I was wondering the same thing. It really does look like a camera but there is no mention of it in the description that I could see.

EchobreakerThat's not a camera...it's where you connect the mount. I thought the same thing.

These still use Mini-USB? Good lord.

atomicthumbsWhy would you need or want a smaller connector? The Mini-USB is much more sturdy and reliable than the micro. You think it should have a USB Type-C connector?
Decent GPS, not so much in the pricing department though...

This unit is $109.99 at Best Buy... Why isn't the Massdrop price more competitive?

AMS2020New Egg has it for $129.99 free shipping... So essentially the same price at the lowest drop price + shipping. Not to be a pain but I feel group buying should yield higher discounts.

We have the previous model of this and have found it to be very useful. We both have smartphones, I even have offline maps, but that doesn't guarantee you will be able to get turn-by-turn directions. We have been in many situations where we had no service, or low battery on our phones with no charger. I particularly like the voice activation on the Garmin. When we traveled to Italy this summer I simply loaded the Italy maps. The Garmin was 10 times more useful than our smartphones. IMHO, phones are an OK backup to a real GPS, but they will never replace it.

gmcnair88Another thing I notice missing on Google Maps is the speed limit indicator and current speed.

Why wouldnt I just use my phone? I cant see why anyone with a modern smartphone would opt for this.

I am never without a data connection for long, but there are plenty of apps that offer "Offline" maps:

Your_HIGHnessWhat do you do when you are traveling and don't have any service? Your phone won't be worth anything then! GPS units work regardless.

It boggles my mind why Garmin (or anyone really) hasn't improved on the hardware of their stand-alone GPS systems over the last 5+ years. If one can by a smartphone for the less money (Moto E), and it has a higher resolution screen, faster processor, better battery life, and far more functionality; why doesn't a stand-alone GPS?
