Joq21KME has a design flaw, similar to Gatco version of this Lansky. Difficult to verbalize, but the guide rod must be in line with the surface of the stone. Lansky solution is somewhat rudimentary, but if assembled properly, the angle between the stone and blade remains constant, which is the entire point of all these guided systems. The KME and Gatco have a design where the guide rod and stone are on different planes, so the angle constantly changes during each stroke.
Lansky system is seriously versatile, has a nice steep learning curve, it's expandable, and affordable. The results are as precise as the user has patience for, but there's no inherent flaw to struggle against.

Aside from the other comments about pricing and usage issues... I find it odd that Massdrop isn't displaying pictures of the system in use. While I'm all for doing my own "research" I refuse to buy something when the company selling the product can't take the time to provide adequate information to the buyer.

Cferrer1983Eventually.... It will take a long time. You would be much better off with the diamond set

RobhimselfI agree with Robhimself. Get diamond for grinding and ceramic for the finish to work on high end steels.

I hope for everyone who's bought that Lansky's fixed their product. I've had two of these sets (one I purchased and one I received as a gift) that the stones fell off the handles...no warranty coverage from Lansky...

I found a consistent angle very very difficult with this system. A knockoff edge pro apex system about the same price and easily 3x better. Jm2cw.

There is a learning curve for sure. It is not idiot proof but this system can do a great job.. The only thing better is the wicked edge.

kenstogieproblem with knocoffs is the quality of the stones. Low end stones won't last, will carve and be rather inefficient. Well, at least this is what testers say and what led me here.
Now, maybe I will end up with a Wicked edge at some point. Too bad I went through spyderco triangle and lansky kits first :D

SynystrYou're probably looking at the 3 stone coarse model. This is the four stone model, which Amazon has for $35.

anon242The one on amazon is the 5 hone set and can be found for 38$. This set is worthless without the last ultra fine hone. Sometimes massdrop really doesn't know what they're doing
