They have a full and solid cup that blocks some outside noise and prevent sound from leaking out. The sound also bounces of the cups and creates its own sound signature.

In short, it's a membrane made of natural fibers that is much thinner than paper. They use it for burn treatments in place of skin as well.

I use them directly from my phone. I’m sure you *could* use an amp but you absolutely don’t need to.

They are nice and light so great for longer listening sessions and I feel they handle most genres of music pretty well.
