Hey everyone, thanks for your patience, seeing the posts re: Bootloader and wanted to give an update. Drop is sending out a few pcbs from the production run to myself and PCB designer Quadcube for us to figure out the issue and how to fix it. will update this post as I get more details thanks everyone again and we’ll get this figured out asap. Update 1/23/2020: Quick status update - QuadCube and I have put together the design package for the custom flashing header. We've submitted the design files to Drop on the 15th but don't have a status update yet on they're end for production etc. If you have a TeensyUSB on hand already, the guide posted by @davidfriar is confirmed to work and it is what I would recommend. Please find the link here: https://github.com/davidfriar/tokyo60ispflashing/blob/master/README.md Thanks everyone again for your patience - I'll update as more info filters through to me from Drop & co. Update 1/14/2020: Hey guys: Apologies for the delayed update. First off thank you so much @davidfriar for the fantastic guide and also the trouble shooting along the way. taken sometime to confirm a few more things and confirming that there was an issue with the initial flashing meaning that an ISP reflashing is the only way to solve the issue.  I’m working w/ QuadCube right now to create a custom header for a USB ISP flasher and looking at Drop to get the custom header and the flashing device out to people who would need one.  Will update everyone more as I get more details on how this would roll out.  A million thanks again to @davidfriar and everyone who provided their input. I can’t DM anyone here but if anyone wants to reach me I’m on discord at TokyoCoffeeNerd#1733 or Instagram @tyokbd update 1/10/2020: Package has been found and will arrive to QuadCube tmr morning. I’ve sent my pcb over as well just in case. Thanks everyone - more updates soon. update 1/10/2020: Waiting to UPS/Yamato to locate QuadCube’s pcb. If they aren’t able to locate it by EOD today Japan time I’ll ship the unit I have on hand. Sorry guys probably not the updated you wanted today. Also confirmed /w Drop that there has only been one firmware ver. provided to them which includes bootloader (same as v1 + v2) - want to wait for QuadCube to take a look before testing any re-flashing. update 1/9/2020: Confirming what every one has experienced w/ bootloader. @davidfriar
  1. - thanks for checking the reset switch and traces, confirming that this is not an issue on my board as well.
  2. Someone mentioned that pin PE2 might be the culprit if not pulled down - confirmed this is not the case.
  3. Double checked firmware provided on my side and is the same version as PCB’s v1 + v2 which have had no issues w/ bootloader.
  4. extra PCB still ‘in-transit’ to QuadCube, calling UPS to follow up on the package and see what’s up.
quick update 1/8: pcb arrived and in-hand. Quadcube will have arrived also. confirming I’m seeing the same bootloader issues also. Going through some checks now. update 1/7: PCBs have arrived in Japan and in transit to me an quadcube. update 1/3/2020: PCBs are enroute to Japan eta 1/6. I’ll be able to provide more updates then once we go over and replicate what everyone’s seeing. Also thanks everyone with sharing their status, it’s helping a lot to build a clearer picture of what’s going on. oh and as @jimjon noted, the Tokyo60 case was designed to fit all standard 60% pcbs

@davidfriar & @WarBird Thank you for your posts it was extremely helpful. I was able to flash a bootloader using an elegoo uno r3. I had to run the command from the reddit post since QMK toolbox didn't recognize the elegoo. Again thanks!

tokyocoffeenerdDid Drop or someone ever resolve this issue? I recently bought a Tokyo60 Season 3 used and discovered that I couldn't get it into bootloader mode, and found this lovely problem. I don't have an Arduino or Teensyusb laying around to implement David Friar's ISP flashing procedure. Any updates?
//update: 3/14/18 @7:40am How do we only have 2 days left? Thank you every one who's joined the drop so far! To clear up a few things about the color-ways - all the color styles run in this drop will be exclusive for this round. Specifically, rose gold will not be coming back, and the 'core' colors of black/silver/gray will not be coming back in the exact same way or shade!
I hope this can make each round still accessible but exclusive in it's own non-douchey way, and for everyone who joins each round, to know that what they're getting will be special and limited :)
Also shout out to Chokkan aka u/stoic-lemon for his super fun interview he shot with me last week! Catch it on his YouTube channel here:

//update: 2/24/18 @ 11:57pm Hey Everyone! There's been a few questions about what keysets/keycaps you'll need to fill out a tokyo60. I put this graphic together which will hopefully help make things clearer!

Most GMK Kits will fit. XDA, DSA, SA, MT3, Tai-Hao you'll likely need: - 1x 1.75u Shift (R4) - 2x 1.5u Modifier (R4) - 1x 7u Spacebar
_______
FAQ: //How thick is the plate? 1.5mm - we tried 4.5mm and preferred the 1.5mm version as integrated makes it pretty stiff already.
//Does the PCB support PCB mount switches? YES! It will have the cutouts to support those snap in pcb legs.
//What shade is the Rose Gold? It will match my samples so will have a more copper like tone as in my profile pic. //Where are my HOLY PANDAS? Will we ever hear that wutang album? May or maynot be @YanboWu's official response.

It’s happening! Thank you everyone who’s been patiently waiting and thank you everyone who’s given their time, love, and energy to support this project.
Charles and Ray Eames famously remarked that good design is what “makes the best for the most for the least.” And with that I couldn’t be more excited to work with MD and @YanboWu to make the tokyo60 as accessible and available as possible. No raffles, no outrageous prices, just a focus on quality through simplicity.
A lot time was spent fussing through all the small details to make it just right. I hope you guys will enjoy the tokyo60 as much as we’ve had fun designing it!

Hey everyone, dropping a note here while @tokyocoffeenerd is still sleeping in Japan.
I'm excited to get this keyboard going again - especially after we worked out the various manufacturing issues during our first run. It took a lot of back and forth and a lot of samples before we were able to consistently produce the Tokyo60 PCB without issues.
There are 2 new colors been offered this round (and a surprise guest that I'll announce shortly as well) and the new keycap set looks pretty awesome as well. Moreover, the addition of the acrylic diffuser means this PCB can be used in all its glory - the number of light modes by default is actually pretty significant so I hope everyone will get to enjoy it. I've had a chance to use the completed Tokyo60 keyboard the past couple days and I have to say the HHKB layout is really growing on me. I still make some mistakes with the Backspace location.
Please note that we will be collecting payment at the end of the August. This is to allow us to start prepping the the order to ensure smooth delivery. With Chinese New Year looming in 2019 - it's important that we get our production lines rolling so it doesn't affect the delivery of this drop. If this is an issue for you, please make sure to join the drop after August 31st.
August 26 Note: Regarding the diffuser and keycaps - I will have to setup a secondary drop for those that joined in Season 1. This will make the options not as crappy to navigate for everyone. I will update here on when we can expect to have that secondary drop up.
September 18 Note: I've extended out this drop by 2 days in case the Tokyo Cadet drop does not succeed and those members still want to join the Tokyo60, they will still have the opportunity. This will not affect the fulfillment timeline.

YanboWuI got the V1 of this but managed to mess up the threading where the screws go. As such, I cannot assemble the board and I am sad. I might be able to take a drill press to the thing, drill out the existing standoffs, 3D print some housings, and push some standoffs in those to screw it all together properly, but do you have any extra aluminum cases that you can send me? It would mean the world to me. Thanks!

VictorzaroniDo you have a friend that's good with helicoil? I haven't had to on a keyboard, but I've fixed all sorts of stripped things by tapping it larger then installing some helicoil to narrow it back down to the proper threading.
Hey everyone, Just to give you a heads up, as mentioned by @tokyocoffeenerd, we're currently troubleshooting the issue and we'll announce a fix/resolution as soon as it's ready. You will not be stuck with boards that aren't flashable/configurable. Our Customer Service team has received tickets but aren't fully versed in the problems with this product; so their information and responses have been incomplete, we're working on correcting that. You may certainly request a full refund, and we'll setup shipping to get the return unit back to us. Alternatively, you can wait until we've announced a resolution and then decide whether you prefer the resolution, or would like to continue with a return. @tokyocoffeenerd will continue to provide updates as he makes progress with the fix. UPDATE 01/27: We've received the custom fix files from @tokyocoffeenerd and are working with manufacturing partners in China to see how quickly we can get a custom solution/flasher built. Unfortunately it's the Lunar New Year there right now so more or less everything is closed. In addition, there's quite a bit of uncertainty due to the health concerns that are currently affecting the country. In parallel with the above work, we're looking to see if we can put together an off-the-shelf solution that would be an acceptable user experience. If that's the case, we'll go that route instead of the custom build. In terms of those who are solving the problem on their own, we're offering a $50 refund or $60 Drop Credit to anyone who wishes to forgo the aforementioned, to be announced solution. If you email customer support, they will provide you with either the refund or the credit (at your option) and you will not receive the fix kit when we ship them out. UPDATE 01/28: We've been told we'll be getting a prototype of the custom-produced flasher in the next 7 days! UPDATE 1/31: Our contacts in China RE: the flasher have gone dark on us in the last 3 days. Likely due to the health situation over there. We're reaching out to some North American manufacturers to see how quickly we can get something done. UPDATE 2/4: We have a North American manufacturer lined up to make us a sample ISP flashing tool. We should have a same in the next 7 days, and if that's approved, we'll get them made and shipped out to everyone. UPDATE 2/6: Waiting for the sample to be sent to us from the North American (actually Canadian) manufacturer. We expect it to be here next week. Update 2/14: Have some good news that we'll be sending out via email over the weekend. TLDR; should have a solution very very soon.

And yet all of our keyboards are still broken, and no one has any idea when they will be fixed. Top job, really, way to handle the situation by doing as little as possible while still holding all of our money.

I’m pretty miffed by the whole situation and if @tokyocoffeenerd wants to run a group buy for his new split board I would highly recommend he not use drop to do it. That being said; I do think the communication has been better. @guyleplace just take the $50 bucks and buy a 1UP PCB. It has stronger backlight, is guaranteed to work and is C to C compatible.
Hi everyone,
We’re checking in to let you know the Massdrop x Tokyo Keyboard Tokyo60 Keyboard Kit is making its way through production!
I also wanted to share some updates and fixes we've made to the keyboard in the meantime. If you checkout the profile shot of the keyboard in the drop page, you'll notice the top and bottom casing doesn't meet perfectly. We've made some updates to the design and you can checkout some of the photos of the update below.
We’re on track to meet our estimated ship date of August 16, and we’ll update everyone in early August with the status of the shipment.

YanboWuHum.. that Black looks so good, kinda tempted to swap my Rose Gold (GMK 9009) to Black since I order GMK terminal for the end of the year.
Hey everyone, I'm back with another update on the status of Tokyo60. Our QC checks were completed but took longer than expected - the keyboards are looking good. Right now we are trending for a week of December 16 fulfillment - we are most confident with an estimated ship date of December 18. My apologies for the delay on this - we are working hard to get these in your hands before the end of the year.

YanboWuYou gonna step in and tell us what we are supposed to do with these broken boards, or what? Is there a particular reason you are ignoring us? Do you feel this is a good look, ignoring all of these complaints? If I recall correctly, you've stated in an interview that you are "responsible for the Mechanical Keyboards Community." Is your current behavior something anyone would call "responsible?"

In all honesty, I don't get it. What is so special about this KEYBOARD? Why do people flip out about keyboards? ...and good god...why is it so expensive?

"Wow four years late to a thread only to provide the same well-trodden obvious opinion" And yet you replied, still as butt-hurt as ever. Over what? "I'm still not sorry enough to spend so much time in front of the computer that I need to convince myself to buy one of these." Then what is even the point of you creating this thread? This keyboard isn't even "super Custom awesome" it's an affordable entry-level keyboard kit. Who hurt you?

MikeLouHaha. You're the one looking butthurt here, champ. I'm merely annoyed that you are so clueless and apparently unable to follow the arc of the thread (or come up with a logical analogy). At this point...four years later...the intricacies and functionality of the focus your niche "hobby" are quite well understood by me. ...as well as the perpetually butthurt and defensive nature of those drawn to this sad way to cope with the misery of their day to day existence. "The fact is, I truly feel sorry for people who think they need super Custom awesome keyboards."-- Clearly I'm not specifically referring to THIS kb as "super custom awesome"... Maybe if you step away from the computer screen sometime you'll learn to recognize sarcasm, kid. So...more to the point: who hurt YOU? Maybe you're so habituated you don't realize you're hurt. Hahahaha.

I'm probably the only person who had this problem, but just in case I wanted to share what I learned while trying to change the QMK firmware on my Tokyo60s. Ten Quick Steps to Flash New Firmware

1. The configurator @ https://config.qmk.fm/#/tokyo60/LAYOUT_60_hhkb is pretty great. The configurator is missing a default keymap for Tokyo60, so click on each on-screen key and press the corresponding physical key on the board. Hopefully this will be corrected over time. Default key map is there, no worries. 2. I used the MO(1) macro for the function key to trigger a momentary toggle to layer one. - I spent a lot of time looking for a non-existent FN key in the configurator. - Make sure you keep PAUSE somewhere in your keymap, mine is on layer 1. 3. Read the docs on docs.qmk.fm and build your keymap. 4. Click 'Compile' and then 'Download Firmware' to copy your new keymap firmware to your machine. 5. Download and install QMK Toolbox, binaries available for Mac and Windows. 6. Click "Open" in QMK Toolbox and select the firmware file ending in ".hex". The correct microcontoller is "atmega32u4", which I found defined in the QMK Tokyo60 source code. 7. Put your Tokyo60 into boot loader mode using L_SHIFT+R_SHIFT+PAUSE. The default layout uses FN+p for PAUSE. 8. You will see 'DFU device connected' if your keyboard toggles to bootloader mode. 9. Click the 'Flash' button in QMK Toolbox and wait for a device disconnected message. 10. Test out your new keymap! If your keymap doesn't work or the magic boot loader L_SHIFT+R_SHIFT+PAUSE stops working, don't despair! Get out your trusty Philips screwdriver and take the bottom plate off your keyboard. With the keyboard upside down, the purple reset button is on the right hand side in the middle of the board. With QMK Toolbox running, push and release the reset button and you should see a device connected message. Make sure you have left and right shift available in your base map as well as PAUSE. Here is my working keymap, feel free to grab it and make it your own. https://github.com/JnyJny/tokyo60_keymap This guide is replicated here too: https://github.com/JnyJny/tokyo60_keymap/tree/master/firmware

yeah! it should be on caniusevia.com’s site under the Tokyo60 v1 tab. i haven’t flashed it quite yet, but i’ve heard that’s the firmware you’re supposed to use.

I tried bootmagic sequence and did not work. But thank you. L_SHIFT+R_SHIFT+B (no extra layer needed) worked for me! PCB revisions perhaps?
For those that are building their kits for the first time, @tokyocoffeenerd has created a build guide. I hope everyone enjoys their keyboard kits and happy building!

I just posted on Reddit about the lack of communication by drop and this was the response I got from drop_official “Not sure why posts coming from us would be considered better than posts from the designer? The designer is working on solving the problem, and once it’s solved, we will implement the solution. The designer is providing timely updates that they’re working on it. We’re waiting for that to happen before we can do anything.”

Leisurely pace is totally fine, and I agree we don't really need weekly updates by any means. But I'm very specifically talking about this PCB testing that's occurring. It's a little worrisome to see a comment like this, where testing is apparently being done, when I bought into the group buy under the impression that this kind of stuff had already been sorted out. So an update on something like "PCBs are totally working and going into production" would be very nice to hear. This isn't a small insignificant thing, this is literally the main component of the keyboard. If things aren't working out, it would be kinda nice to know.
Again I'm not saying spam my social media or the discussions on this group buy with updates. I'm saying that plenty of time has passed on this drop to see at least one official update. The drops estimated length is 5 months from purchase to delivery, one update every four weeks shouldn't be hard to pull off. Especially if, as we can see, something pretty important is being worked on.

weston990"If things aren't working out, it would be kinda nice to know." Can't even admit to it now. Still "looking into" why those that have received their board can't flash their PCBs. I get the feeling they know exactly what's going on, especially after that month delay for extra QC.
