Great little light, I use it as an EDC (every day carry) for work. I work in IT so am behind server racks where there is not much light having this in my pocket saves so much time trying to see what I am doing. The magnet in the end is also an awesome feature to attach to the metal in the rack for hands free work. Light is plenty bright and having it using AA batteries means it is easy to get replacements. Have not had it on a long time so I can't really report on battery life. I used rechargeable batteries for it and since buying it I have not had to recharge it yet with occasional use at work and home.
I really like this light. I've had it for about a month now and I got to use it on a recent camping trip. Put outs a decent amount of light even on the lowest setting. Uses a single AA battery so it's quite convenient to pack backups.
I'll probably get the CRI version of this and use it as a light for photography.
This is the first item I own of this category and although I won't have much use for it any time soon, I don't regret buying it.
What I love about it:
The build quality is definitely something.
The brightness levels are well balanced, although they differ from the anime window sunlight on the pictures.
The hidden magnet on its butt is a really nice touch.
The knob is designed to be easily turned even with greasy or wet hands.
It's very easy to use.
What I don't like about it:
The bulb has 2 medium thickness greyish lines going about the middle horizontally, and I find it very distracting. It's probably a manufacturing thing, similar to lines you'd find in a normal bottle of water. But they don't show it anywhere on the pictures.
Love this lantern. Its small, it takes regular AA batteries and it works more like a lantern than a flashlight. Already used it at a camping trip a week ago. At full strength, its quite powerful. Don't know how long those AA batteries will last at that power though. Will be trying it out.
Clever/thoughtful design; well made; too heavy for UL backpacking; not super bright
Fair price and cool Chapstick design. Not as bright as I'd hoped so not suited for home emergency kit. I wouldn't carry it for thru-hiking or section hiking with ultra-light gear - too heavy. But could be useful for car camping, short backpacking trips, glovebox, tacklebox, etc.
The day I got this lantern/flashlight, my clothes washing machine broke. And I descovered to my delight the powerful magnet that I could stick to the inside lid of my washingmachine as I reached around in there with a wrench etc. This thing saved my life (and eyes)
The light seems to be pretty picky with what batteries work.
I originally tried using a 1.2v rechargeable eneloop (shown in the product pictures) and the light wouldn't switch modes. So far the only battery that has worked, was a 1.5v lithium battery which isn't even recommended in the manual.
Besides these issues, the light is fairly lightweight and compact and the lantern mode is perfect to hang at the top of a tent.
Listen others may like it but I hate the design entirely. To turn it off you gotta slightly unscrew the cap that holds the battery in place?! What kind of cockamamie engineering is this?!
Jon-CooleyYou kinda have to get use to it. Its crazy I know. I had bought 2 of these 3-4 years ago from here itself. The lights are still working wonderfully and I use them often. They usually lie in my car and have used that magnetic back a few times fixing the car tyre or working on the engine. Initially, I too struggled with it, but now I do that to all my flashlights. disconnect the batteries slightly (it drains much much less power that way)
Took this camping with me over the weekend and it was an awesome night-time light/lantern. Even on its lowest setting it will fully light up a fairly large tent (or even a small room). Plenty bright enough to use as a lantern to sit around the picnic table and play cards. The strap it comes with is hefty yet comfortable to tighten around an arm/wrist. I didn't have much opportunity to use the magnetic base of the lantern, but it's a welcome addition if you have something metal to stick it to when you need both hands.
Overall a double thumbs up from me.
