When the forecast calls for rain and your adventure calls for a lighter pack, count on this folding umbrella from Snow Peak. Compact and lightweight without compromising quality, it weighs just 4.7 ounces and measure 8.6 inches long when stowed Read More
Could somebody please check the measurements? It says "Diameter, open: 33 in (100 cm)" and 100 cm is 39 inches. That's a pretty big difference in diameter if you want to keep more than just your face dry.
Hate to be that guy, but, I feel like I would appreciate if someone shared this with me. Sorry Massdrop!:

Looks to me to be nearly identical or possibly made in the same factory. Their weight estimates conflict in their own listing (7.4 and 5.6 oz), but this thing is LIGHT. I have not had the opportunity to weigh it yet, but I'd venture to say it's closer to the 5.6 oz. weight. Make sure to order the 'slim' version. There are several colors available. I ordered the light blue, which is really more of a light grey, but definitely not as reflective as some other options out there. In hindsight, I wish I would have bought the 'silverblue' color which looks to be very reflective.
I took this out on the AT for 3 days last weekend, and we had about 24 hours of straight rain. I have never hiked with an umbrella before. There were 6 of us in our group, all in full rain gear, and I was the only one carrying an umbrella. I was also the only one dry after several hours of hiking.
For those of you commenting on straps and how to carry it: I found that the back of the umbrella rested perfectly on the to of my pack, and even hung over the back by a little, effectively helping keep my pack dry. I put the arm of the umbrella under my sternum strap, and was able to mostly walk hands free.
I love this thing, and it has become part of my EDC in my bag.
normadOne area where a Snow Peak would likely be better is in the lifetime warranty. Earlier this summer, I broke a stay--after emailing Snow Peak, they immediately sent me a replacement; no questions asked, no cost to me.
DannyMilksHighly depends on the terrain. I’ve hiked with an umbrella before, but it wasn’t very technical. I would switch the Rain Skirt for a pair of FR G1000 pants though.
John Abela did a very nice comparison of this and the Chrome Dome umbrella on Hikelighter.com Ultimately for me, although this is an oz or so lighter than the Chrome Dome, it is not as robust, as big or as wind resistant, just more compact.
I've been pining for an UL umbrella but I don't know anyone who uses one to help me understand if this is a good choice. Saw a guy on the PCT with one which made me envious one hot summer day. Any UL umbie users out there in Massdrop land???
DavidJRThe ones on the PCT have a reflective UV coating which this one doesn't and they are cloans of the original"Crome Dome UL Umbrella" which were sold by GoLite (mfg. by a German mfg., EuroSchirm, and branded as GoLite...see link below for a good summary), who unfortunately are no longer in business. The UV cloans are a few more ounces in weight than the one offered here by MassDrop.. Check out the uv umbrellas mfg. by Gossamer Gear and Zpacks.
