What is the purpose of the cylindrical connector on this cable? To make it detachable and give it modularity? Or something else? Thanks!

This is correct, you do get this function.
Most people will however not use it for that and just use it for aesthetics.

Is it possible to add an additional length of cable running to the PC? I want to run 2 lengths of cable and use the quick connect to switch between machines. I'd like to not have to order 2 and have extra keyboard-side connectors.
