I've been doing more backpacking trips to the Aleutian Islands recently and sometimes you get completely in the clouds which is very disorienting because everything is off-trail. A compass you can refer to frequently and easily is a big help - essentially a necessity, because it's hard to keep looking at your GPS / smart phone Gaia app every 20 steps.
I tried a cheap ($5 for 4) watch-band compass off of eBay but while it was liquid-filled, the magnet wasn't strong enough for it to point to N quickly. This Suunto does that well and is well worth the (not much) money for a more real compass.
There is a sharp bit on the bottom of the compass that rubbed against the skin of my wrist on the first trip I took. A bit of tape fixed that, but give it test drive around town before committing to a long trip. I've been wearing it on my watch strap at the inside of my wrist, but am considering wearing it on a loop of elastic band (3/4" wide elastic from a fabric store) on the other wrist or over my shirt sleeve for even quicker reference.
I picked one up from mass drop as a back up. It reads north well, lumes well, and the rotating bezel is nice. I work in land surveying and having a rough compass is a handy thing to have when working in the woods.
The only down side to it is the "clip" feature. I really wish they would make it as a solid unit so i could slide it on my watch strap.
5 stars, not because it’s perfect, but because, given its diminutive size, it works. The clip can be limiting, as it is narrow. However, once installed, I find it reports North accurately, using the GPS as a benchmark.
I usually love the products I get from Massdrop, but these things are junk. I bought a couple and none of them ever pointed North reliably. After only one camp outing, using this thing as a backup compass to quickly reference direction, the bezel popped off and the compass fell apart. These are not durable or reliable. They are barely more than a toy.
I got this for my Apple Watch. It secures fairly well to the band but I can’t find any position where the clip doesn’t dig into my wrist. So now it’s clipped to my EDC bag. It’s a cheap compass that points north.
Very handy compass that is attached to my watches, so it is always available to me when I wear a watch. The compass is stronger than many other similar compasses, which have trouble spinning the dial toward North unless the compass is perfectly level. The only issue with this compass is that the clip does not hold onto what it is strapped to with enough strength. I have lost one of these compasses already because it came off of my watch and I never knew it came off until I looked at the watch. I now secure the compass' clip shut with some epoxy, so it must now be slid onto the band. I have read other reviews from people who have had the same issue. An improved clip design in the future would make this a 5 star device.
