I love Massdrop and usually they offer great products but this thing is junk. It couldn't find north with a GPS. It is an unreliable, fragile, flimsy piece of junk. Bought 3, all three point a different direction. The bezel fell off and the compass fell out on 2 of them. None of them survived the first hiking trip they were used on.

Because hiking is following a trail and not trying to follow a secret path on a detailed map to find buried treasure at the X. Do you not get that this is an ultralight community?

Nobody is using this as their primary compass for navigation. It's to leave on a strap on your rucksack for emergencies.

These silly little compasses might be useful in orienting yourself in a large parking lot, but you'd be a fool to travel in the bush relying on these pieces of junk. If you really want to navigate reliably, get a Suunto KB-14 or a Suunto MC-2G, Sunto M3G, or something comparable. Also, familiarize yourself with how to land navigate by knowing how to convert a True North or Grid North map reading to a Magnetic Bearing and vice versa. Remember also to remove your knives, multi-tools, hatchets, axes, and any other items that might adversely affect your compass reading. Don't make the mistake of venturing cross country without having a solid grounding in land navigation using a map & compass. This advice is coming from a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas with years of exploration experience laying out hundreds of miles of seismic exploration lines using a Suunto KB-14. For high altitude work, your going to need a Brunton geologist's compass. Many good internet/YouTube articles you can refer to. You can thank me later, when you make it back in one piece, hopefully.

Welp, I wouldn't pay that much either. Mine was offered @ $2.75 shipping, which I think is reasonable. Don't know why yours is different.

I own 3 of these. I always take one with me as a backup when i go backpacking. However the reason i own 3 is because 2 got bubbles after some extended wet and cold trips into the bush. Great little backup compass, but so far i get about 12 months out of each.

bookworm13Yeah, im almost there. I mean I do love the little thing, but at somepoint ill probably start reusing the bubble filled ones rather than buy more. Its not as accurate but itll keep me from walking in circles if i lose my way.
