I was a fairly early TE adopter, am in love with the keyboard, and no longer have mine. This is my story:
The design is amazing. I even stuck with their key layout and ended up being fairly proficient with it. If you are happy with the default layout, you will be happy with this keyboard, especially if you exercise the patience and hard work that it takes to learn a new key layout.
Having said that: I do not own any windows machines. If you plan on modifying the firmware whatsoever, be sure that you have access to a windows machine!! The keyboard works on linux/osx just fine, but their firmware programmer is an atrocious little win32 app that only runs on windows.
I got the ErgoDox a drop or two ago, and love it almost as much as the TE, but I would never of my own free will and choice cross swords with TECK Co. "customer "service"" TM. In the end I got my money back, and they were gracious to have given it to me well outside the warrantee window, but it was a painful and unreasonable experience. I keep meaning to completely document the experience, but just want to put it all behind me and get back to enjoying my ErgoDox.
If you want to reprogram your keyboard at the click of a button from Linux/OsX *do not get this keyboard*; invest in an ergodox.
