Better than expected.
These are pretty awesome. They last as long or longer than advertised. (If broken in properly. I'm sure this could get messed up, via impatience) They get warm rather quickly, never get uncomfortably hot (when placed in their sleeve), and they are extraordinarily consistent in output. I'm very happy with these. I bought them more for the novelty. But now, have sets for the whole family to enjoy.

Excellent Buy
I read a lot of reviews on this before buying a pair and a lot of the reviews said they smelled too much like lighter fluid when in use. I bought the Zippo fluid made specifically for these hand warmers on Amazon and have barely noticed a scent at all. They take a while to warm up, but once they get going, they're very warm for quite some time.

I have seen these things since I was a kid and never really understood them. I tried a pair from Massdrop and was so impressed that I got 2 more pairs for gifts. They work very well, and last for hours. The only drawback is the odor. So long as you are outdoors, you are fine but indoors they smell like burning diesel fuel. It is in the nature of what they are, not a defect. My daughter had a tough outdoor job and she put one in each pocket. She said they were life savers.

Used it in minus 5 degrees on my trip last week. Was in the himalayas. These work brilliantly. Left it with the family I was living with. I will order another pair next time it drops.

Unreliable as hell
Just a few minor gripes that add up to meh. 1) When filling both to the 12-hour mark, one consistently burns for more than 12 hours while I don't think the other one has ever made it to 10 hours. 2) I'm using the Zippo brand fluid and they smell like hell. I thought I'd be able to toss them under the sheets on my wife's side of the bed when I'm done using them, but she can't even stand to have them in the room. 3) Very, very tough to find the right temperature balance. The thin pouches that come with them often seem to cut down on the heat too much, but removing them from the pouches makes them too hot to hold. Sometimes. Other times, they just don't seem to ever get warm enough. I don't think they get enough oxygen in my coat pocket, but if I take them out they get hot but aren't doing their job. 4) It's worth saying again ... these things reek. On balance, I'll likely go back to the disposable hand warmer pouches.
A year later, the edit button is working, so I'll give them one star only because I can't figure out how to give zero. Tried them again today for a 5 hour outdoor job. I filled both to the 12-hour mark; lit them 30 minutes before I needed them and they got nice and warm. After 3.5 hours, one was ice cold and the other lukewarm. That one kept going another 3.5 hours, so a total of 7 hours. So for 24 hours worth of lighter fluid between the two of them, I got 10.5 hours worth of use. Does anyone from Zippo or Drop monitor this stuff? These are either pure crap or something's wrong with mine ... anyone want to troubleshoot or refund these?

macdaneIt's possible you recieved defective ones... But the break in process is crucial. I have 4 pairs (whole family worth) with zero problems.

WutangClanYes, it’s possible mine were defective, which is why I wrote “These are either pure crap or something's wrong with mine ... anyone want to troubleshoot or refund these?” Not worth the trouble to try resolving, and these suckers are in a landfill where they belong.

The packaging is obscene. A guy could end up slicing off a finger or worse trying to get them open.

The purpose of my review was the emphasize that it was empty and not used in days, and still left a residual smell that caused it to not be able to fly. It is not something you can take with you both ways for cold weather travel reliably.
