Setup: I bought THX 789 for the massive output of idk 6W/32ohms, but whenever I try to use my Sundara/Modhouse Argon/HD600/Arya V2/...whatever, I cannot reach decent listening levels in terms of db without getting this scratching/hissing noise in the background ... I think it's distortion. (DAC I use: Geshelli labs - J2, set to max volume) Settings: With an XLR output, gain setting level at 2/3 and the volume knob set to 2-4 o'clock, hearing distortion from a 250-350$ THX amp shouldn't be a thing, should it? With somewhat hard to drive headphones, I'm not reaching 70db, but I can already hear this godforsaken noise on all tracks without a constant stream of sound. If you dare to up the volume past 4 o'clock, or past 12 on gain setting 3/3, this noise becomes so loud, it might as well be an additional instrument Music: The tracks I usually listen to involve so few instruments, that you don't have a constant stream of sound. (e.g. Creep - Lena Hall) I'd love to get some feedback!...

I have two pieces of advice for you. Find a headphone store near you and go and listen to every single pair of headphones with the same song such that you can start to get a map of the headphones and what you like. You can't read reviews and judge from other peoples opinions what you will think of the headphones. The second is look around value villages and salvation armies and other such stores around you. The salvation army that is right beside me luckily enough consistently has headphones in them. If they look like cheap eye candy don't bother but if they look weird or high end try them yourself and see if they are good. I have a pair that have flat driver units that have excellent sound stage meaning it sounds like I'm there. I picked up some crappy looking sennheisers (px 100) that just needed some new pads that are one of my favorites right now that have amazing sound, as I put it it has a lot of air in the sound. If you do this make sure they work before you buy them. I got a couple that didn't work and fixed a few of them as they were just a disconnected wire in the driver unit most of the time but the last one I fixed was costly to fix then turned out to be tired drivers that didn't quite work so now they're trash. Another benefit of trying before you buy is finding things that don't work like how the buttons on the sennheiser 630vb don't work.
What headphones would I suggest... my friend would suggest the sennheiser hd25-1 ii as the best all around headphone. Maybe the akg k553 or the audio technica ath-m40x (https://www.reddit.com/r/Zeos/comments/66wz27/guide_headphones_general_usemusic/). These two will be very different. Maybe try to decide between these three. All of them will be excellent. akg k553 is constantly on massdrop. I would suggest either the akg or sennheiser based on your budget and availability.
Anyway i will keep checking and camapring hopefully i can decide before the drop ends. Thanks all ^^
value village and the salvation army are both stores that get donated goods then the donated goods and takes that money and puts it into charity. the salvation army is a sect of christianity so all the profit goes to charity and value village is a business so a small amount goes to charity based on the weight of the donations.
