Because it's a group buy facilitator not a retailer.
Massdrop arranges a price point if they order X units of a product. They then indicate how much they can sell that product to their customers for (or set up a drop in Massdrop vernacular). Customers can decide whether they want in or not. After the drop has finished Massdrop finally knows how many units it will need and orders them from the manufacturer. Then you wait for the manuf. to ship the bulk order to Massdrop and for Massdrop to break up the bulk shipment and ship individual customers their purchase.
Depending on the item, it might not even have been manufactured at the time of the drop. Those take even longer.

HeeftyI understand that explanation for pre orders (drops) but what about items that are listed as "IN STOCK". Which to me would mean Drop has the item according to your explanation. So Drop is based in SanFrancisco why the international shipper? My current purchase is being shipped by PostNL International (based in the Netherlands) and I'm assuming it is coming from China (where it's made) Your explanation doesn't hold up. Previous orders from drop from the same manufacture have been sent by Fedex Smartpost. Drop also doesn't even show on their "check-out" page anything about shipping not until you've completed your order other than listing shipping as "free" Drop needs to understand customers don't want surprises when it comes to shipping we want to know upfront. I would rather have option to pay for shipping and be able to choose shipping company than be surprised to find out (after the order is placed) that item will hopefully arrive...sometime. Their shipping policy needs to change.

FlyinFSome things have changed in the 3 years since I posted that comment. Many things. And not for the better. I have no idea how shit works around here anymore. People have been asking for a choice in shipping for years and the process is still fairly shrouded in mystery. My guess is that is due to simplifying logistics but I am unaware if that has ever been called out.

HeeftyI found out several things about how Drop operates and some things are unsolved. The 2 items I bought were at what they call their "offshore warehouse" it's in China. I noticed after purchase that they had a "Note" about shipping on the items listing it stated shipping would take 3-5 weeks for this "in stock" order (in stock for drop means it may or may not be in the states) my order is not in the states. I also noticed on that same listing for the products I bought the "Note" now has changed on listing to 4-8 weeks So my order left China warehouse June 1st arrived in The Netherlands June 10th at PostNL (the courier) and has been sitting there since, today is June 27th...2 days short of a month since purchase. 17 days at the PostNL distribution center and counting. I can't imagine the back-log they must have. Unsolved Will I have to sign for package? I think package(s) get handed over to USPS for final delivery Will USPS show tracking? Or will I one day find out they 'attempted" delivery but I wasn't home to sign for it. Bottom line this will be the last time I buy from Drop.com I'm not alone since this ordeal I've researched and posted a lot about my latest experience too much really and have found many similar stories, but I want to get the word out. Now if you don't mind waiting 2 months for something that's "in stock" knock yourself out go for it.
