Since early this year (around march), DHL have started to charge additional fees for products that went through customs and are worth more than ~20 Euro.
I ordered a set of notebooks for 30 Euros, was charged 5 euros in customs but had to pay an additional 6 Euros for a total of 11 Euros, meaning the fee was higher than the customs themselves!
This makes any overseas purchase sub 50 euro extremely unattractive and is ridiculously consumer unfriendly.

The bottom line is that if you find a nice product deal on something that's around 30$, you'll end up paying over 40 Euros by the time it arrives here because of customs, shipment and this stupid 6 Euro fee.

If I just outright refuse to pay the 6 euros, they'll just keep the package. Asked a guy at the local post office and he was just as confused as I was about this service fee. They could do without one for the last few decades so this really is just a lazy way of getting some more money out of customers who already paid for shipments...

Just tell them that you won't pay the fee because they didn't ask you if they could do the customs for you. Then you won't have to pay the fee. I'm not entirely sure what happens after that tho. You might have to go to the customs office every time (?) i.e. I did this once with fedex (the delivery service doesn't matter) and they subtracted their fee from my receipt. But since then I haven't gotten any other parcels I had to pay customs for so I don't know what is going to happen to the next parcel.
