Chair
Its a chair. It has all the necessary components to qualify as a chair, including, but not limited to, a seat.

Initial thoughts - an extremely well built chair.
So first off this is my first drop I've participated in, always heard good things about mass drop and remember seeing computer chairs on it awhile back. My old DXRacer Drifting series is 5 years old at this point and has seen a lot of use. It was never really the right size for me but was so much better than any of the OfficeMax chairs I bought before it so never looked for a new chair after it until recently. After further research I found out that chair was recommend for people around 5'10 and 250 Pounds maximum, currently I'm 6'2 and 245~ pounds so immediately decided to make sure the chair I was getting was rated for my height / weight or a little bit over. I looked at the Secret labs Titan and one of Maxnomics chairs but didn't want to pull the trigger on the $400-$500 purchase right there and then. A few days later I remember Massdrop had sold chairs before so I figured I would check if they had any currently running and came across this one. After some research on AK Racing and the dimensions / weight limit of this chair I very soon after put in the order for only $250 on the Onyx. Majority of the reviews were good across the internet so I figured it would be a safe purchase. I was not wrong, Immediately while unpacking the chair today I could tell it was larger than my old DXRacer drifting series chair with more padding. The box came in very good condition so I wasn't worried about the chair being damaged or ripped during shipping and it was indeed no issue. The chair is extremely sturdy once constructed and very comfortable. I have a lot more room to sit on this base than my DXRacer because there is no bucket bolstering me into the seat and digging into the sides of my legs. I cannot feel the frame at all while sitting in it and the foam has a nice feeling to it. All the stitching was well done and nothing was misaligned on the chair. Overall I'm very happy with the product early on and hope it lasts as long as my DXRacer served me if not longer.

Great Chair at a Great Price
Very stylish but needs lumbar support to be the last chair you'll purchase.

Very Impressed
I have had the chair for almost 2 years and I can honestly say it's the best chair I have ever owned. Almost no notice of use and I use the chair for over 8 hours a day for 2 years between work and gaming. I will def buy another one when they go on sale again and I highly recommend it! Their support is outstanding as well. They had sent me a replacement base because the piston dropped too low in the base and was dragging on the carpet. Nothing is perfect but this is proof that they stand behind their products! A+

Heavy, clumsy, and badly designed
You don't get what you pay for here. This is not a good chair. I strongly advise caution.
  1. It's top-heavy and overbalances easily, because the feet don't spread out wide enough for an even center of gravity.
  2. It's also heavy-heavy, so moving around in it requires that you hurl your feet against the floor to propel yourself at all, particularly on carpet.
  3. It takes the strength of ten men to make it rock, even when the rocker tension is all the way down.
  4. The 4D armrests are obnoxious, sliding and twisting and snapping into different positions at the mildest pressure. It's especially infuriating since you need to clutch the armrests like life preservers while repositioning. Assuming you don't want to tip over, that is.
  5. Its fabric pops and splits at the slightest provocation. Things like the rivets on your jeans will catch and pull -- and god help you if you have a cat. Within a week the chair looks like it has smallpox.
  6. The recline-all-the-way-back mechanism is a pointless gimmick, because (A) why would you and (B) if you dare to try, you'd better plan to live like that, because pulling the lever to de-cline up into a seated position flings you forward with such force you're likely to faceplant on the table in front of you.
  7. Those under 5'9" need not apply. I'm 5'7", so not a tall dude, but I've sat in office chairs all my adult life and somehow my little feet always manage to reach the floor. It's a strain to manage that feat with AKRacing's product.
Comfortable? Fairly. Easy to assemble? Yeah. Worth it? Nope. Not at a quarter of the price.

I naively purchased this chair for my office instead of going with the Master Series PRO version which I already own for home thinking the Onyx would be better suited for the office type setting. The comfort level isn't even close to that of the Master Series PRO version and the "pillows" are so poorly designed that I don't even use them anymore. What a waste. I wish I could exchange this Onyx for the other chair I already own and just have two of them.

I'm 6' 2" 190 lbs and hands down will recommend the Pro over the Onyx. Even the cushion itself is softer than the Onyx and reeks of quality. The pillows actually work too. Do yourself a favor, get the PRO.

Mrmayhem44Thank you very much for your input. I hardly ever see any negative comments about the pro, but the onyx seems to have mixed reviews. You talked me into it for sure, the pro it is. Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

I've been using the regular Onyx chair for about 3 weeks now, and this chair has been... disappointing. The assembly was fairly straightforward, with the instructions and tools providing everything I needed, and some I didn't (like a pair of gloves?). It's a bit larger than I expected, but with the flexibility of height and recline adjustment, the size has not been an issue. For normal sitting, the chair is quite comfortable. At this point you might be asking yourself, why the two star review then? Well for $350, a "top of the line" chair shouldn't have design flaws that are just downright annoying:
  1. My biggest gripe with the chair is the "4D Armrests", which might sound cool at first until you realize that they don't lock at all. If you ever lean on your armrest anywhere except the top, you'll frequently find yourself accidentally adjusting the armrests. This is especially frustrating since most of the time I lean to the side of the chair, it's to get to a more comfortable resting position, and without a locking mechanism, my arm along with the rest of my body experiences a sudden "drop" as the arm rest shifts to a different position.
  2. Their back/hip pillow is just plain uncomfortable, which I assume they realized since there is literally no mechanism/strap for it to keep it in place on the chair, so why even include it at all?
  3. The headrest pillow, while comfortable, relies on the tension of its elastic band around the top section of the chair to remain in place. The problem with this is that if you look at the pictures, the top section of the chair, where the headrest lies, widens as you go down. Now this wouldn't normally be a problem if the bands of the headrest pillow had something to tie around the chair, perhaps a strap on the chair itself (since there's already a vertical strap that you tie to the horizontal strap.... that really doesn't do anything), but since there isn't, I find myself constantly having to push down the headrest pillow to get it to a more comfortable position.
  4. This isn't a design issue, but it's another major gripe I have with the chair. This chair REEKS of faux leather (PU leather?); if you lean back with your head resting on the pillow or the chair's headrest, you will find your nostrils violated with this disgusting chemical smell. This is by far the most expensive chair I've ever purchased, but it's also the only faux leather chair I've ever had that has had this bad of a smell.
For AKRacing to posit this chair as their "top of the line" chair is quite frankly embarassing, and I can only imagine what their less-premium chairs are like.

otterjimAgree 100%. In fact I just posted a review with a lot of the same complaints before scrolling down to read yours. Buyer beware.

A fairly average chair for the price. I bought the Onyx Deluxe. The plastic cover for the recliner lever is hilariously flimsy. The leather on the seat is at a slight angle, either that or the mounting holes for the seat back weren't properly aligned. One pillow came without straps, and the neck rest pillow has an elastic band that's way too small and a useless loop that attaches to nothing. And it all comes with a smell resembling either mold or chemicals.

Big chair.
The seat was comfortable for awhile but not for long periods of time. The arm rests were great in terms of articulation but the lumbar pillow and headrest hurt.

Very comfortable seat for a day of working or gaming. The included headrest cushion sit a little high for me, but is overall not bad. The rest of the chair is durable and the level of adjustment is good.
