Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to point out the Scott the President from AKRacing has already addressed the issue of what type of leather is used on the Deluxe version of the Onyx chair 2 days ago in the discussion thread. It is in fact Top Grain Leather as Scott has double confirmed this with the factory where only AKRacing chairs are made. AKRacing is the OEM of their own chairs and they do not product chairs for any other brands.
Just so everyone knows that this is the first time the Onyx series chairs are being offered in the US and is not available anywhere else but Massdrop. I am not sure where @osmija got the information he posted about this chair but he is not correct in his assumptions.
Again, this is a Top Grain Leather chair. I have also confirmed with Scott that the leather portions of this chair are made from one large piece not multiple smaller pieces. Yes there are stitching patterns being used on this chair but this is for aesthetics value only.
I am sitting in this exact chair right now and it is beautiful, supportive and comfortable. For reference I am 6'4" and 210lbs. If you have any questions I am more than happy to help just tag me in the post.
Lastly, if there are any concerns about material or build quality on any AKRacing chairs, all of their chairs include an industry leading 5/10 year warranty.

AKRacingSupporthi, just want to ask how is the real leather for warmer conditions? is it breathable or as comfortable if it were cloth? I wanted cloth but am considering this because i know real leather is a bit breathable. thanks!

Thanks, that's a a nearly perfect comparison. Our chairs are not designed for "lazy boys", they are for people that sit for long periods of time and want to stay focused, supported and comfortable, not fall off into a stupor. Sort of like the difference between driving from LA to San Francisco in one of those big ol' cushy Coupe de Ville vs. a Porsche Carrera. I know which one seems more relaxing when you first sit down but I also know in which one you will finish the drive in the best mental and physical condition...and it's not the lazy boy.

AKRacingAmericaReading these comments, I wish I had the money to place an order. I work in tech (a lot of desk time) and also enjoy gaming outside of work (even more desk time). I'm a big guy, and tend to kill smaller/cheaper chairs rather quickly. The customizability of this chair (angles, including the 180 nap angle) is awesome. Will these be available for resale at a later date, or is this only available through drops?

i got my replacements from them along with the foot rest a few days ago. The dent is still there on the backrest but I got too much going on right now to spend any more time trying to resolve an issue with a chair. As long as the leather doesnt rip or parts break im just done caring at this point. lol

I can only honestly compare the AKRacing Onyx chair to the DXRacer Iron Series Chair. I used the Iron series chair for my first year and a half at Massdrop. It is a great chair. I actually do not have any complaints about the chair. That being said I did give that chair up for the AKRacing Onyx chair that I am currently sitting in. It is of much better quality in many ways.
The Onyx is made from the highest quality PU leather available and I can vouch that it is better than what DXRacer uses on their chairs. Also, the Onyx Deluxe has real leather which is actually the chair that I am using. Its awesome! Second, the ergonomic support that the Onyx chair has is so much better than the DXracer. It has a more natural shape in the chair itself that fits to your back perfectly. I do not even use the neck or lumbar support pillows on the AKRacing Onyx chair and I always used them on the DXRacer Iron series chair. It did not feel right without them.
As far as the foam itself I have seen the inside of both of these chairs at one time or another and can say that DXRacer uses a more traditional style foam that is not as durable, breathable, or as comfortable as the DXRacer. Now, again I am not bashing DXRacer here. They make a good chair that I was very happy with for over a year, until I sat in the AKRacing chair and gave up that Iron series chair in less than a day. Its a world of difference. Lastly about the foam. The DXRacer is 54 kg/m³ on the entire chair. However the AKRacing chair is 55 kg/m³ (seat) 50 kg/m³ (back) the difference gives you the support you need in the right places.
Now, about the weight. I can not speak to exactly why the DXRacer is heavier. However I can say that it does not make any difference in the world. In this case the heavier product is not the superior product. Just look at the weight the King Series supports (<300 LBS) VS the Onyx Series supports ( up to 330lbs).
Lastly you can get the Onyx here on Massdrop at a much better deal than you can find a DXRacer King Series anywhere and if you ever need any help we will be here to help and AKRacing will also.

Just built the chair and man oh man I love that leather smell! It is a really comfortable and good looking chair. I just wish the bottom piece that attaches to the seat had directions but aside from that it's great.

BlueCrownedIt's not IMO except for the fact cow leather commonly comes from animals who are brutally slaughtered for other purposes, where much of the dog and cat leather industry uses the dead animals only as food for other dogs and cats. I don't have any non synthetic leather as it seems stupid to spend money on a less sustainable, environmentally unfriendl, and less resilient material

I participated in this drop the last time it was held and received my chair rather quickly. After using it for several days for 10+ hours a day, I can say that this is by far one of the most comfortable computer chairs I have ever sat on. I opted for the leather version and am very glad I did. It does not get hot like my old computer chair that had PU leather.
Unfortunately, I did have a small problem with the seat of the chair. Every time I would change positions the chair would make an annoying squeaking sound. I also noticed the arm rests were not the same on both sides (the left side was touching the seat, the right side was not). I went ahead and e-mailed Michael from AKRacing and let me tell you guys. He answered my e-mail within the hour and took care of my problem right away. They'll be sending me a replacement seat as this was considered a defect.
I must admit that this chair is quite expensive, but with the warranty and incredible customer service backing it up it was most definitely worth it for me, considering I sit on this chair for 8+ hours a day. It is very comfortable and would work well for larger people (I'm 5'11'' 250lbs). Thanks again AKRacing!

EzoptionI also sit in the leather version of this chair for 10+ hours a day. It is the best chair I have ever tried and I have tested many. The AKRacing PROX chair is my second favorite. Both being superior to the DXRacer IRON & KING series in my opinion as I have had and tested all of these chairs for extended periods of time.
Also, Massdrop continues to support AKRacing by offering their complete line of chairs because they have a great quality product back by the best warranty in the industry. EzoptionInteresting, I actually saw a number of people say that they sweat more in the leather than in the PU leather. I thought it was a bit of an interesting point but after looking over a number of people saying the PU leather breathed better, I went with that one. I live in ATL and let me tell you, it can get downright swampy during the summer.

Amazon and walmart price matched MD on PU version, but on leather version, MD is still unbeatable.
