Product Description
Beluga whales are known for their domed cranium, where they get their echolocation ability. While this knife may not be able to determine location via sonar, it can certainly make some noise on the job Read More
I am a sucker for thin, lightweight folders with 3-inch blades -- I'm in.
Also, MD offers a larger selection than I can find online. I prefer the stonewashed blade offered here to the satin offered elsewhere. And the price is lower here.
It's an eternal struggle on enthusiast's boards it seems, it actually kind of drove me away from my paid membership on BladeForums. I wasn't able to get clear information about foreign products that didn't include a tax for being sold under an American company's brand. I wasn't really able to ask questions about or discuss Chinese knives at all without threads getting locked because of hotheaded bonises who wouldn't quit calling basically any Chinese maker a design-stealing slave labor-using state-subsidized den of treachery and warranty disappointment.
They would even just casually imply that a Chinese knife maker must have a terrible warranty experience if any at all, ignoring that those were the days of Spyderco rejecting warranty work requests if people had broken their factory threadlocker.
OmniseedYeah, i can imagine....I haven't been hanging out there much for a while (not for any particular reason, just haven't been that much into knives until just the past few months again. Before that there was a bit of an obsession with kitchen knives, but used other forums more specific to that), but I do recall that place feeling skewed towards certain brands and makers. Forums will always be very clique-ish.
It's just fortunate. Forums in general, potential for being such a perfect place for people to be able to be introduced to new gems that they may have never found out about otherwise....so many companies out there, no one can find/test them all on their own.....and instead things that could actually be really good get squashed by the closed minded hive mentality before they even get a chance
Looks nice, but the price is interesting. It is a smaller knife than the other Bestech knives that have been sold on here, and it has a lower grade steel than the usual D2 tool steel used in their blades. Why is the knife more expensive?
"Available on Massdrop before anywhere else"
I don't get it? Hasn't this knife been out for a while?
Also, it's not the blade that takes its inspiration from the shape of the whale, it's the handle....
I think my swordfish was $39.99+shipping. Actually carrying it today, love it. I can double check that price.
This is probably a great knife, I just feel the pricing is a bit off from Massdrops normally excellent Bestech pricing.
namhodThat sounds right on the swordfish
Thing is, they all seem to be the same retail last I looked, so not surprising this doesn't get more of a discount compared to others
And i get what you're saying, i'd like to see the price a little lower too, given the slightly less expensive steel.... I just think at the price we're at with these, anything more expensive might be a pass from customers, less expensive wouldn't be worth them making it without cutting corners somewhere, in either steel type
That said, I'm carrying my Thorn today, also in 12C27. It probably gets more pocket time than most of my other G10 Bestechs, and it holds it's edge well
I just received mine, in Australia. I’m very impressed compared to the Lion, it’s a step up in terms of F&F, flipping action and ergos. It came shaving sharp, slightly off center. What a bargain. Being in Australia, most international shipping is quite expensive. massdrop international prices are ridiculously cheap, keep it up massdrop.
I ordered this due to its size and shape, even tho its 12C27 stainless and not 14C28N. I wish some of these companies would make more models with three inch blade and under models. I like 3.5+ inch blades as well but not for EDC. There are several brands that I like the look and shape of their lineup, but the blades are just too big for me; Ruike and Stedemon for instance.
I have a Bestech Kendo that I rather like, but it has a deep carry clip and D2 steel which are both upgrades in my mind. The Kendo's only real weakness is the blade can cut you from the back side of the handle when closed. That is a big no-no. This looks like a nice knife if you are a fan of the blade steel. Sheepsfoot blades are always nice IMO, though they call this a drop point.
OmniseedYes, agreed. Wharncliffe crossed my mind in the comparison (they seem quite popular here), but I guess I got lazy lol, so thanks for pointing that out
I brought this because I have the Bestech Lion and it’s a fantastic budget knife. But unfortunately I don’t carry knives that large. I do wish this Beluga came with D2 steel though. But for the price I can’t complain.
Yes, the D2 model is on BladeHQ but in odd colors...neon green, blue/black, and orange I think. The Torpedo seems a more attractive compact model with more usable blade length although it's a bit heavier than the Beluga.
