I remember when this site marketed itself as a cheaper way to get stuff through group buys and slow shipping. Now its been overrun by hypebeasts and "artisans" who want to charge "hobbyists" $70 for a cable that ships in less time than cheaper alternatives of reputable quality. Why in the world should I buy this when ZapCables, SummitCables, NinjaCables, and a dozen others are selling the same thing for $30-$40? For $70 i can get Lemo connectors. I just dont understand how Drop continues to list things like this.
That's fair. I think it's good to let buyers know about compliance and power details the next time this goes up. Those are pretty important info especially if it's not guaranteed to even power Drop's own keyboards. Good luck!
summit is just another hack... don’t eat the game streamer hype - they pay those people. it’s all kids in their bedrooms. all you buy js a fire hazard. see my post above.
Ahoy everyone,
This is the first event that CruzCtrl has done with us. Unfortunately, there was a limit of 100 cables due to some time constraints and also each one being handmade. We decided to run a monochromatic color scheme to have the best option for anyones' setup. I've seen the popularity due to how quickly they sold and how many of you guys have already requested a rerun - there will be more drops in the near future with other color and coil options. If you have any ideas or preferences of what you would like to see, feel free to drop a comment and I'll relay the suggestions to CruzCtrl.
Thanks!
Hiya everyone,
Josh here aka CruzCtrl. I've been a customer of drop (formerly known as massdrop) since 2013 and it really is an honor to be running this sale here.
A little bit about my background: I got into making cables after getting my first mechanical keyboard that had a detachable cable a little over a year ago. I decided giving making my own cables a shot and really enjoyed the process that went into making them. Since then, making these cables has been kind of my odd way to unwind after a long day / during the weekends (I would assume it's a similar feeling for those really into knitting). I went to school for computer engineering and ended up working full-time in the esports / live streaming field (which I really do enjoy) after graduating. Being able to go through countless iterations and processes made to ensure the durability and reliability of these cables has been a great outlet to use the knowledge and skills I picked up in university.
About the cables, my process from start to finish for each of these cables is about 2 days. Everything is made by myself and and a few folks helping me out as much as they can. I've been tinkering with every aspect of the cables to find out what the best way is to prevent shorts, make strong retractile coils, and overall make something that can be used for years. I'm quite satisfied with the current quality of the cables, and I sincerely always make the best effort to ensure people who do purchase any of my cables will receive something that is worth the value.
Very thankful for all the great folks in the community who have helped and guided me along the way. Thanks again to drop for the opportunity.
Why make such a nice cable with 28-gauge power wire? An extra few cents per unit and then you could of had 24-gauge power and you may of had a purchase from me.
A 28/28 gauge will deliver less power, while a 28/24 gauge cable, thanks to the presence of 24AWG, can handle up to 2amps. The maximum the 28/28 will provide is 500mAh which can put some RGB LED keyboards in a low current situation. This low current situation will generate heat, and will shorten the lifespan of the cable.
jhambone9190Double sleeving makes this super thick already, thicker than a PVC 24awg cable. With a 24awg wire, you'll need the wider paracords (not even sure if there is anything sufficient for 24awg since paracord 750 maxes at 5mm accepting maybe 4.5mm max). Might be able to get away with a techflex sleeving with 24awg but it will be much thicker than this cable.
this means there are zero certificates to begin with but then also no testing or quality check done on the signal or volt/amp rating or whatever could be done. it’s just some kid and a soldering iron with $5 worth of aliexpress materials.
now if someone burns down his house cause his kid plugs it into a quick charger, that’s covered for the price?
$69 - you have to be kidding me. if that isn’t the worse cash grab i’ve seen in the last years.
no wonder massdrops office is half empty. it’s getting desperate it seems.
EpictheHamsterIf you pay a premium, wouldnt you at least assume they properly test the product? I'm not salty, I just find it comical that there is no test protocol added or any sort of reference as to if this is a properly working cable.
SpencerLYeah, this is totally possible. I typically haven't seen much demand for usb-micro in the past, but it sounds like a good idea to keep stock of micro connectors and provide it as an option in the future.
