Hey everyone,
We’d like to address the reports we’ve been receiving on ghosting / double tapping on the CTRL keyboard (i.e. pressing ‘f’ but ‘ff’ shows up).
For those of you who are having issues, one of the more common fixes we’ve found is 1) pulling the switch from the PCB, 2) clean the metal contacts with a piece of cloth, 3) reinsert the switch. Sometimes, dust and particles will cause double tapping to happen.
However, there are instances where the above method does not work - for those, we ask you to please go to your transactions (https://www.massdrop.com/transactions) and open a ticket with our support team and we’ll help you out.
For those who are more curious about our findings - in instances where the cleaning method failed, we’ve found replacing the offending switches takes care of the problem. In the few instances where this has happened, we’ve found the offending switch to be a Halo switch. We are working with our suppliers to undertake various tests to determine the root cause of this problem. Once found, we’ll be able to find an effective path to remedy this.
I hope this puts everyone’s mind at ease. Apologies for anyone experiencing this. Rest assured we take these issues very seriously and will be working hard to resolve it.
YanboWuThank you confirming this information. I got in the most recent drop and have since been continuously considering cancelling my order due to the reports, but something in me told me that the pattern I saw in all the comments was that it was Halo switches so I'm glad I went with Kaihua Silver. Really looking forward to getting my CTRL!
YanboWuGood to know you have isolated the problem, but I purchased one with Halo Clears and extra Halo Trues. I guess I'll reach out if there's a problem.
YanboWuFYI I've been sent two replacement CTRL keyboards with Halo Clears due to this key chatter issue, which means I'm on the third one. The issue has begun to reoccur with this keyboard as well. Removing, cleaning and replacing individual switches has worked for me temporarily, but to my mind that's not an acceptable solution because it makes it clear that the keyboard and switch combinations were poorly tested before sale.
MingI have two keyboards here (my friend got one too). One with Kaihua Silvers, other with Halo Clears. Both keyboards are less than a month old, and both are experiencing the double taps, not on the same keys either.
YanboWuCan we get an update, it seems more of my keys are experiencing this issue and i do not want to get a replacement with the same problem. I would say a total of 10 keys are experiencing this issue now.
YanboWuTake the issue so seriously that you'll only issue a statement on this after people have harped on it for a year.
I ended up having to replace all of my switches, as even on my 3rd replacement board, keychatter developed. You should really stop selling the Halo variety, or perhaps issue some kind of firmware fix to try to help with keychatter. I swapped to some cherry mx switches i had around, before finally opting for KBD T1's. Pretty much solved the problem, although every so often I'll get a double space.
As a side nitpick while I'm on it...the stabilizers that come on this board are awful. Couldn't spring the extra 60 cents for official cherry ones, eh?
John_NongNah, in the post above they basically said they're not going to do anything about it besides talk about doing something about it. Most of the issues are confined to halo switches, but they're just going to keep selling them, along with standalone switches so you can give any keyboard keychatter.
PigmonkeYThat's the problem, I'm intended to get one with the Halo True switch. I'm debating between this and the Kira but both seems to have problems of its own.
YanboWuI've just had to return mine with over 40% ghosting. Which makes entering passwords impossible and getting locked out of work systems a real joy :o/
YanboWuAfter 6 months of using it 30% of the keys now have this issue for me – some even with tripe tapping. If it's related to the HALO Clear switches you really shouldn't be selling those anymore... this is more than frustrating.
YanboWuIt's been approximately 4 months since my unit started double tapping. I've held out making a return hoping for a fix to be issued.
However it has steadily deteriorated to the point where typing masked passwords is almost impossible and even normal typing is extremely inconvenient. I can't even Alt-Tab to the window I want because the Tab key is double tapping so badly. It's going back.
Switches I've bought for it, wasted. Keycaps, wasted.
I for one cannot believe Drop is continuing to sell this faulty product when they have no idea what is wrong with it and so many buyers are still high and dry.
People, don't buy this. What is the point of a nice fancy keyboard that doesn't work right.
mcm089Have you received anything from support on this?> I have an ALT on order and they pushed it back to the 10th now, originally the 8th. Having my doubts about spending this much money on a company....
YanboWu@YanboWu anyone still taking this seriously at massdrop? or was this just another "shit i've got to make the marks feel better" post like everyone thinks it was?
KeyboardWhispererI'm on my third replacement, finally had to just swap all the keyswitches (out of pocket) with decent ones to mostly eliminate keychatter. I'd go through input club and buy a k type or look elsewhere.
timesscarWe've not abandoned this project. We are testing out a few potential fixes now and things are looking promising. Once we confirm this takes care of the issue I'll do a more in depth announcement on the page.
YanboWuGlad to see it being worked on. Looks like the debounce issue I mentioned in an earlier comment was addressed.

Since I last posted on the issue, I've been testing similar modifications on my personal fork of the source code. Changing the debounce method seemed to fix things on my end.
YanboWuLooks like it still a issue only last month I brought the keyborad and I already got double tap issue on two keys but it only happens sometimes. Halo clears ALT board
