Well, I'm going to be making a build for my mom, but she didn't want me to spend a ton of money. So, I figured KS-3 milky yellows were appropriate. Budget switches swinging high above their caliber.
I think the factory lubing is ok, too (but I'm sure opinions on this will vary wildly).
Factory lubed, little stem wabble, nice sound. What's not to like here? Factory lube seems to be done extremely well here, comparable to my hand lubed JWK linear switches, these will be my go to switches when I want a good linear that I don't want to spend 4 hours lubricating.
These are still arguably my go-to budget switches if you want a slightly deeper sound and they are a great weight. I put these in any board I don't have a clear vision for in terms of keycaps and switches. I do also really like the Gateron Smoothie switches which come in a little more expensive, but are also another great budget option if you're looking for a slightly louder, clackier switch.
For the price, you really can't go wrong with these, and they're cheap enough where you can be sure to have extras on-hand in case you need them.
Finally got my hands on these "budget kings". Honestly, the switch scene has advanced a ton since these have been out, that I'm feeling a bit let down. Imo, these don't feel like the best cheapest linear option (especially at $12 for 35), or factory lubing considered a selling point when it's nearly the norm for most companies these days. On the topic of lubing, the switches are not as smooth as people tout them to be. These 100% do need extra lube done by hand, or the slight scratchiness will distract you if you have previously used proper lubed switches.
On a brighter note, I like the light actuation and the sound these switches make. Stem wobble is surprisingly minimal, too. It'll definitely scratch the itch for someone coming from membrane or the run-of-the-mill blue switch keyboard.
These are decent switches. If it's your first foray into keyboards, you'll find these are more than enough. For those just looking for something budget, you can probably find something cheaper elsewhere that's nearly just as good. For anyone else just looking for something new, I'm not sure this will bring anything to the table.
KTT Strawberries are 40 cents per switch, which is slightly more expensive than the Milky Yellow here yet punches way above its weight. If you want something cheaper, KTT Rose is only about 25 cents per switch and similar to Yellows. Outemu Pink Jade is about 26 cents per switch and I'd personally get these if you're tight on budget. Smoother and even less stem wobble. All 3 mentioned come with factory lube.
If you just want something good, can't go wrong with Box Inks, although those are higher in price. If you don't care about hand lubing at all, Oil Kings are great.
These switches have an interesting feel out of the box. It took me a few days to get used to them. I like them more now and the price is about right. I would buy again but there are linear switches that I like better. I don’t want to name drop, but Aqua Kings or Moondrop may be my favorite linear right now. This is personal preference but if you want some nice linear switches, go for it as they will not set you back heavily.
These are not the greatest switches in the world. But for the price and after a bit of hand lubing. These switches are the tried and true creamy switches.
