Weighing nearly 2 ounces and measuring more than 14 centimeters, the Churchman’s Prescriptor is decidedly large. But there’s nothing clunky or inelegant about this fountain pen by Italix Read More

I've had this pen for months now and now that it's back on Massdrop (I got mine here!), I felt it was time for a review.
Of note, the description says the pen is not intended to be posted. This is incorrect, the cap is specifically designed to "click" into the top of the barrel of the pen, it posts more securely than any pen i've ever owned. I'll give you the cliff notes of the handwritten review, below.
Out of the box the nib was a little rough, especially the top right corner of the writing surface of the nib (perspective is as pictured, below). This is to be expected due to the type of modification (italic oblique). After some slight adjustments it is now much wetter (to my personal taste, was not bad before) and smooth no matter how I hold the pen. The nib i purchased was a (right-handed) Italic Oblique in Medium. Lines vary from XF/F - B depending on the position of the nib due to the cut. Nib itself is rigid, absolutely no flex and is not designed to flex (you will damage it if you try).
Ink is a mixture of mostly Noodler's Apache Sunset and a little bit of Waterman Inspired (formerly South Seas) Blue. Gives it a nice almost Diamine Safari look, without the drying out problems.
Paper is a Rhodia Lined Pad.
Reactions to the pen after using it for months:
1. Pen is HEAVY (solid brass body, section, and cap), but well-balanced when posted. I do not tire after writing even multiple pages of notes.
2. Threads on the section are annoying, but not a deal breaker (not sharp, you just notice them when writing). It could be a deal breaker if you have very large hands, I do not, so it's merely annoying for me after writing for a while. Maybe someone with larger hands could comment to clarify.
3. Nib is an absolute joy to write with. It is rigid, but the customization done (by Italix I presume) has allowed the pen to give immense character to my terrible handwriting. Buttery smooth (now) and no ink flow issues. Feed keeps up as designed.
4. The pen itself is EASY to disassemble and clean--a MAJOR plus, as generally cheaper pens (<$100) are harder to clean effectively.
5. I did have to super glue the barrel to the section as this came apart almost immediately after I received the pen. No issues since then and the pen works perfectly. Likely the adhesive they used at the factory was defective for my batch as this happened to a number of customers in the same drop (see older comments in this thread).
Final Thoughts are that I'd consider this pen a "Best Buy" for the price point. There are a few nit-picky issues all noted above, but in all, you will not have a more expressive and easy to maintain pen for the price. It doesn't feel cheap and is clearly solid and well-made (minus the super glue issue, obviously). My advice, bite the bullet and buy one, but treat yourself to a customized nib for the full experience.

Thw1990Thanks for the informative review! Thinking of picking this up too. I have a question: Since you got the right handed italic oblique nib, does this mean you're a lefty? I'm trying to confirm that logic with multiple evidence scattered in this discussion page.

Yay! My Extra Broad Stub Churchman's Prescriptor came in the mail today. I'm so excited to start using it! Thanks Mr and Mrs Massdrop! You've made my New Year. One question though, where does the ink go?

EDIT : After a little nib work, a few passes on 12000 grit micromesh, a few pushes on the nib, I'm fully satisfied with my pen. It writes much smoother, with less ballpoint-like feedback and a wetter line. Fountain pen magic, you can always work your pens somehow !
Hi there ! I've received my pen from the last drop yesterday. I've inked it up asap with Akkerman #5 and was a bit disappointed. Nib (fine cursive stub) is very stiff. I understand it's a steel #6 nib but it's way beyond the stiffness I expected on a steel nib. While it isn't scratchy, I find it has a lot of feedback and I have to write with some pressure to get a constant flow. Maybe it's my pen, maybe not... but I'll have to work a bit on the nib to smooth it and to make it a little wetter.
Pen itself is very beautiful and robust. It gives you that feeling, you're holding something that could outlive you if well taken care of. The new section is long enough to rest fingers and threads aren't sharp. Gold plating is very shiny and piano lacquer is smooth and well polished.
Overall, I find that the pen is very well-made, solid and robust, but I'm a little disappointed from the nib. Guess I'll have to do some micro-mesh work. Here's a little bit of writing to complement my opinion. I hope other buyers didn't have the issue I've mentionned.

NightharperYour writing sample is much appreciated. I just wish Massdrop could do a better job on providing more writing samples for all their FP drops.

Why doesn't the seller show us at least some examples that help the customes understand what are the differences between the nibs?

kimwookI agree. While the "Nib writing guidance" is somewhat helpful (thanks kplus), they really should just have a writing sample of each nib. Picture being worth 1000 words and all...

The explanation of oblique is completely murky. It says a left oblique is for right handed people but then the description says "left-handed oblique". Huh? So is this a right oblique meant for left-handed people or a left-oblique. Why can't the description just clearly say choice a is for right handed people and b is for left handed people. Just say who it is meant for, or just say left oblique or right oblique but not left-handed oblique and right-handed oblique. I've read dozens of explanations but I still don't know which of these nibs is meant for right-handed people.

Please read the review from Thw1990 below; of particular note he points out that though the MD description says the "cap is not designed to be posted," the opposite is true. The cap posts with a satisfying click and lends balance to the pen while writing. As I am an unapologetic cap-poster, this was of interest to me.

writerstephenThank you. I also had the same immediate first concern on reading, ". . . cap is not designed to be posted." Glad I decided to check out the Discussion and read your post. " The cap posts with a satisfying click and lends balance to the pen while writing" appealed to this unapologetic cap-poster. ;)

LeadingEdgeMost welcome. Interestingly, massdrop still has not changed their incorrect copy with respect to cap-posting, though they have several photos with the cap posted.

I might be missing something here, but usually the actual shipping cost is stated. This drop says "+ shipping." Also, where does the $88.99 msrp come from? The Mr Pen site (The company that makes Italix pens) has this pen for $64 shipped to the US!

BB13I just saw that too. It's $51.06 to purchase without shipping right now. $8 less than going thru massdrop… This keeps happening and doesn't make sense.

32$ shipping for a pen? Come on, it doesn't weight that much and the box is not that big. 😑

I own about 5 of these pens. I also collect other brands of fountain pens. Some are antique & some are new. They all are however, top quality, and that's why I buy Italix pens. Some people say these pens are heavy. Not me! I say they feel like quality instruments. They are also very well made. If you don't have an Italix Churchman's Prescriptor fountain pen you are really missing a great writing experience.
