Mechcables Red Samurai Custom Coiled Aviator USB Cable
If this board had existed 8 years ago, I probably never would have gotten hooked on mechkeys 😆
I had the original FreeStyle for ergo/RSI reasons, but hated the squishy keys and lack of customization. This is exactly what I wanted back then… instead I built an ErgoDox and the rest is history
scorchnlI was able to do this on a past drop by contacting support. This time I might just leave the mousepad behind and Amazon another if I ever get back into the office.
Question - on this keyboard do I need software on the PC to run it? Maybe put a different way- if I can't have any third party apps on my PC what do I lose in features?
Sum_guyUnlike the original Edge, the RGB SmartSet App is download only since its too big to store on the keyboard's 4MB v-Drive. You may or may not be able to "install" it on your work PC. If cannot, you can download the App to your home PC and configure the keyboard there since all settings are saved to the keyboard. If you aren't able to access the App at all, you will be limited to the default 9 Lighting Profiles and you'll miss out on some of the power user programming tools (macro delays, Tap & Hold, Multimodifiers, special actions) but all basic remapping and macros can be done onboard without the App.
Heads up. Kinesis has a sale at their site ( https://gaming.kinesis-ergo.com/ ) through the end of the year: this keyboard + tent kit (either version) + XL Mouse pad for $200 + Shipping. For me, it came out to $215.72 shipped. The "upgrade" to Silver Speed switches is $4.38, as well. This is likely an equal or better deal, depending on what you want, and it will ship earlier.
ShalakazaamMaybe for games that aren't an MMO. I feel I have too many key binds with an MMO. Furthermore, had keyboards that were 65% split w/ macro pad on the side and really wasn't a fan of them after a while. Just seem to like F keys at the top in groups of 4, for easy blind feel to find them for stuff like long cooldown skills or macros. Left column could be for less used stuff like bags, gear swaps, potions.
There are only four items I would change about this board.
1: Ditch the stupid 3.5u spacebars, change it to 3u so they can be sourced from another keycap set and move the bars 0.5u.
2: Offer PBT Doubleshot keycaps as an upgrade or even help source the near impossible to find caps as a single purchasable set.
3: 1u escape key please.
4: Use a standard TRSS cable instead of physically connected all the time. Also, USB-C on the left half instead of connecting on the right half.
Now for the Pros about this thing:
1: The macro capabilities are really good
2: The tenting options are very stable
3: The key layout is similar to a 68% with extra function keys on the left side
4: Remapping works very well
5: Programmable without the need for external software
EDIT: Looks like some things have been changed since I was part of the drop.
I have this RGB version and am typing on it right now, with Reds. Best keyboard I've ever had, without question. Can use it 24/7 without fatigue thanks to the split and works amazing in games as well. Would also suggest you get the lift kit, as that extra ability to adjust things makes it just that much better. Wrist pads are great as well. Nice padded support, stand up to wear and tear VERY well. I'm basically at the PC working or playing 8-14 hours a day and it's just never had an issue. There is also software to program macros and keys in all modes. I haven't used it myself much, but it appears very robust in what it can do. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this purchase, if you've always wanted mechanical with the split MS Natural feel.
