One of Kovea’s best-selling stoves, the Spider provides a powerful, evenly distributed flame and folds down compactly for easy storage when you’re on the go. It’s a great solution for year-round backpackers, combining the reliable convenience of a top-mount canister stove with impressive cold-weather performance when the gas canister is inverted Read More
Lol. I bought one of these to use as a slim, easy to store, small profile burner for my siphon coffee makers.
I haven't gotten around to using it yet. Has anyone used it for that purpose?
Recently got the email about delays on shipping the latest drop of this stove. Any idea on how much of a delay? Trying to decide if I should wait it out or cancel the order. Thanks in advance.
I picked up one of Flat Cat Gear's Snow Leopard windscreens for the Kovea, on EBay. The 1.1oz Snow Leopard works for mugs and small pots, and packs away nicely inside the 700ml -800ml mug/pots, but will interfere with packing an 8oz canister inside. Flat Cat also makes a larger screen for pots, the Bobcat.
I think it might be the cold affecting the lighter that might be the problem. Lighter fuel is butane after all. I use an electric lighter with the button switch so I can use it with gloves on but it'll get finicky below freezing. I eventually resorted to carrying a firesteel as a backup and it works great with this stove.
PaperCloudGood point! I was overlooking that. I did purchase an electric lighter some months ago but 1 of those seems to be the same weight as 5-6 butane lighters. The trip after this one I did use a small (~1-1/2") fire steel, it worked but I could probably improve my technique as it often took a few attempts, or maybe a slightly longer fire steel.
Can anyone comment on a comparison of the Spider vs the Bulin BL100-B5? About the same weight for an inverted canister stove, but less than half this price if you buy direct from across the pond.
Great little stove. A wind screen is essential with this, however. Very susceptible to wind blow-outs. Also, expect a healthy spray of cold fuel on your fingers when unscrewing your canisters from this stove. I find myself always reaching for my pocket rocket instead of this, and offer this stove to non-backpacking friends when we head for a night or two.
I'm idly curious about what would happen if one we're to hook this stove up to the fuel pump for a Primus OmniFuel or an Optimus Optifuel. I know you'd have to find a way to preheat the stove, but it'd be awesome if it worked!
Tarrant83KOVEA Spider folds up small and flat (95mm x 85mm x 24mm) and it fits inside MSR Titan Kettle (with room for a small gas canister). It also fits inside a Trangia 25 Kettle (with plenty of room for other items) and it will fit inside most other small pots.
Buffy.the.Mosquito.SlayerMake sure the end of the igniter is touching the top of the burner, and that the gas is on low to medium. Then click 2-3 times. That way it should light every time.
