Product Description
Among the oldest shoemakers in England, Loake 1880 is still run today—five generations after its birth—by the Loake family. Like the founders did in the 19th century, the company’s craftsmen still construct each pair of shoes in their 1880 line using a Goodyear welt, a painstaking process that ensures the shoes are recraftable for years to come Read More

Not a great price compared to the prices you can get on Pediwear during sales (and with Dainite sole options too).

Same site. Without the VAT and free shipping it'd be about the same as our pricing, but then again we are able to ship this to the US and Canada, whereas Pediwear can almost exclusively ship only to the UK. There's shipping restrictions specific to the Loake's brand.

TomasVAh, I see. Very good point--I'd missed the fact that you can't order Loake off Pediwear from many countries. So I should say that Pediwear is the better option *if you can use it*; otherwise, this drop is probably as good as you're going to get.
Not quite right to say that "Pediwear can almost exclusively ship [Loake] only to the UK", though. There are many other countries to which the restriction does not apply. And for those countries, I don't think it's accurate to say the price is "about the same" while the sale is on. You save whatever Massdrop shipping would cost you, which can be significant.

I'm currently wearing a pair of Loake Gables from their Shoemaker range (Shoemaker is the line that's one step down from the 1880s), and I would definitely buy them again. Compared to my Allen Edmonds, the leather seems to crease a bit more, but the 1880s should be using a higher grade of leather than the Shoemakers. Compared to my Charles Tyhrwitt branded Barkers, they seem to be better constructed, though again, the Barkers seem to have somewhat more crease-resistant leather.
With regard to fit, these particular Loakes are the G fitting (equivalent to an E or maybe a EE in US), and they are quite roomy. For comparison, I'm a 9E in Allen Edmonds' 108 last, and usually a 9.5 (or 9.5 wide) on Cole Haans. The Loakes I have on are 7.5, and have room for a Poron insole on the bottom too. Definitely size down one size for these.
$275 definitely ain't bad for 1880s, and I would jump on this if I didn't already have a good stable of shoes already.

The closest comparison to the Aldwychs in AE's lineup is probably the 5-last based Park Avenue. In my opinion, the Aldwych is a sleeker looking shoe, and at least for me, the 5-last doesn't work - once I get a shoe that's wide enough at the balls of my feet, my heels are swimming.

AliasfoxAgreed that the Capital last will look pretty different than any AE last when on the foot. I definitely prefer this shape for dress shoes as well.

Odd that the Dainite sole in the photo of the black shoe is aligned so poorly.

tegeus-CromisI had the exact same thought. It's so close to the stitching that I imagine it's only the glue holding them together at those points.

tegeus-CromisIt looks like a good shoe but good lord you're right. The dainite sole is so damn poorly aligned.

KesboI also found them for 200 pounds ($253) at Herring shoes. That is not a sale price either. The only problem is that Loake won't let Herring ship Loake shoes to the USA.

If it helps anyone, I take a; 8 in F fitting Loakes 7.5 in G fitting Loakes 7.5 in F fitting Grensons 7 in G fitting Grensons 8G in church's 8G in R. M. Williams 8.5 US in Wolverines
An English F equates to about an American EE though the loakes do run a little wide.
All F fitting Loake 1880 dress shoes use the same last so if you can't find a pair of Aldwych to try on Buckingham's or Cannons or most other will fit the same.
Good luck, I have a pair in black and love them. Such a shame massdrop can't ship to Australia..

I can't believe there's no Australian shipping! Loake do quality shoes but they're an awful company when it comes to buying from other countries.

These are awesome shoes. Mine were uncomfortably snug when I got them, but in hindsight that was the right size; they stretched out in the right places.
From within Australia, these are really hard to get now. Pediware et al. won't ship Loake there any more, and there are no Australian stockists. The few retailers that have Loake don't stock 1880. So bleh.
From the Pediwear website:
Loake export restrictions updated to include US and Canada in addition to Australia, Chile, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and Switzerland.
Update February 2016 - Canada and the US have been added to the list of countries to which we can no longer export Loake shoes.

Urgh at this point I've spent too much time looking into loake 1880... Might have to wait for a drop that ships to Au or pay the exorbitant local prices (near double)
