I've never seen a (2) AA flashlight get 620 lumens before. I think I have seen close to 300. I just checked CountryComm website and they show a completely different flashlight than this one. Something doesn't add up here?
saypatThe Thrunite Neutron 2A V2 gets 720 lumens.
I'm not quite sold on the reliability of these high power 2xAA light yet. They don't even list the waterproof rating on the CountyComm page...
Also the title of this product should read "Maratac AAx2 Tactical Flashlight Rev 3", as they also have a single AA light with the same name.
620 Lumens from a Cree XP-G2...?
I really don't think so. Cree's own specifications state that the maximum output is 515 Lumens at 4.7 Watts:
http://www.cree.com/LED-Components-and-Modules/Products/XLamp/Discrete-Directional/XLamp-XPG2
My 2x AA flashlight with the same XP-G2 LED (a Thrunite Archer 2A) puts out a claimed 272 Lumens. The Thrunite Neutron 2A V2 runs a Cree XM-L2 which is a much larger emitter which is capable of putting out 720 Lumens if it's driven well. The new Thrunite Archer 2A V2 (cool white) uses the newer (and more efficient) Cree XP-L emitter, but even that "only" puts out a claimed 450 Lumens on maximum.
Sorry for the scepticism, but personally, I think Maratac are being a little "creative" with the claimed specifications here.
MandoBearBut thrunite rates their lights in ansi specification. Maractacs rating of 620 lumens is at the emitter. So 620 LED Lumens is more then likely 380-430 in ansi specification.(e.g. Nitecore ea21). Nonetheless this is still a great light at its price.
JimmylsxThat may well be so regarding Thrunite and their ANSI ratings, but I still think that Maratac quoting an output which is substantially greater than Cree say is available from the emitter is somewhat suspicious. If it is possible to "over-drive" the emitter to that extent, I wouldn't be surprised if it has a significant effect on its service life.
We'll only know for sure when someone puts one on the bench and runs some proper, independent tests.
AA batteries and tactical is an oxymoron, isn't it? Not sure the advantage of 2 AA's at 3volts, versus a single 4.2volt 14500 that can be recharged 300 to 400 times. A 14500 li-ion is double the energy, and allows the light to be half the size.
bucktenIf you find yourself with out a working light at 2 am the local gas station will have 2aa or you could stock up at the dollar store if needed . A dark room or building is totally changed when lighted. In a critical situation a good light can make a difference
Fatcop415I have spare rechargeable 18650s and a usb charger in my truck. One 18650 is the energy equivalent to 5 AAs. Multiply that by the ability to charge one cell 300 times equals 1500 AA batteries. You're more likely to find yourself at 2am with dead AA's than a dead liion.
This is NOT a tactical flashlight! I does not output 620 lumens!
While the materials and shape may cause it to appear like one, the fact that the flashlight is not easy to turn on along with the fact that the initial output intensity is unpredictable make the flashlight unsuitable for tactical applications.
Compared to my Surefire which outputs 320 lumens, the Maratac is not as bright with a pair of brand new Duracells (on highest setting).
I feel ripped off...
Likely my favorite guilty pleasure from maratac, awesome flash light. Solid. Love the detail of the red button and glowing lens ring. Check videos from countycomm for the operating demo. No regrets. ;)
Is the flashlight not supposed to remember the last setting(high/mid/low) it was on?
When I turn the flashlight on and off, even after waiting for a while when it's on, it just goes to the next mode. For example - High (Off/On) goes to Mid (Off/On) goes to low and so on.
SocksAttack"Memory mode" seems to work fine with mine: [UFMM ( User Friendly Memory Mode ) if you wish to leave the light in specific mode for the next time you go to use the light you now can by leaving the light off for more than 5 seonds]
Compared to my old 511 2xAA ATAC A2 this Maratac is super bright. It seems about 3x brighter, and the tube is slimmer. I will compare to my Streamlight HL and Surefire X300 later... but from 2 AA this thing is impressive, IMHO.
