I rise from the dead to smack talk the Vital once more.
I can't speak to the paring knife or the nakiri; however. You probably don't need both a nakiri and a gyutou. A nakiri and a petty, or a simple gyutou would make more sense.
A serrated knife is also a good addition to this combination. The serrated knife that matches the vital is NOT a good option as A) it's very, very overpriced B) The serrations don't extend to the tip C) It's the same crappily treated steel as the vital and D) you can get a much better performing bread knife for about 20 bucks from multiple companies. Bread knives are disposable, not heirlooms.
As for paring knives there's no need to drop 60 bucks on one, you can get a victorinox paring knife for about 5 bucks that'll do 90% of the same job.
Finally onto the vital. It's worth 20-30 bucks, I would put on the same level as the "high end" options available at your local walmart. Aka not the ones that are coated with titanium nitride to make them taste the rainbow.
If you're thinking about purchasing this deal. Stop. There are multiple forums and subreddits to explore to let you generate a far better list of more usable knives for half this price.
"With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we’ve bundled our best Apogee blades to help you make the cut—literally."
Correct me if I'm wrong, bit Thanksgiving is 11+ months away. Maybe Droop is starting to be honest about their shipping.
14themoneyHahaha. So true with the shipping. Pretty sure they shipped me something to Virginia from Delaware that took a week and a half with stops in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina before it got here.
My theory is that the drunken hobos they hire to deliver the packages sometimes pass out in the boxcar and miss your state entirely. And it's hard to hop the right train with a raging hangover.
See that?!
With just a little encouragement you found the wherewithal to string several words together and (nearly) form a complete sentence!
We knew you could!
Question: the vital chef is listed as being 63 HRC after heat treat and 58 HRC after grinding. Did they mean after tempering? Or did they let too much heat build up on the finish grinder and compromise the initial heat treat?
RayFWell, I'll be damned. That is the only Spanish that has stuck with over the decades! Queremos dos cervasas, por favor! Y donde esta el bano. (My keyboard doesn't have a tilde.)
What a bizarre choice, to bundle this with that Vital chef with the two Takumi knives, when you literally could've been offering a matching set with the Takumi "Kiritsuke" shaped chef knife
KavikI can about guarantee this bundle is to get rid of excess stock, not offer matching set. An oddly shaped, very specialized Japanese style knife with no point, a chefs knife with documented QC issues and a paring knife with a trailing point and no flat (so it's useless for paring). Can't imagine why they aren't selling well. 😜
The Takumi nakiri isn't supposed to be a single bevel blade, the nakiri is a double bevel style. If you want a single bevel blade with a very similar shape, feel, and intended use of a nakiri, look for an usuba.
