Purchased these second-hand and I can't say I'm super impressed. Detail, dynamics, sure but if you're coming from a warm headphone like a 6xx you probably won't like them. Much too bright.
PrestoCGThanks, just curious, tube listener now, but a SS side-grade in the near future, so wondering about the "bright" comments for the Elex I'm seeing and the amps used.
rastusI also prefer tubes and think the Elex sounds great with the La Figaro 339. The Elex is still energetic but the tubes probably tame some of the brightness. This combo (Elex + La Figaro) has become my easy favorite.
loadexfaThe only SS I have is the built-in on the Korg 100, which I think of as a ‘function checker’. Would likely have the 339 but wanted an SET for speakers, and the serendipitous bonus of the Cary 300B SET I got, with the cap power-pack, as a head amp was an awakening. Watching the talk on SS Amps with the Elex. Currently it seems like the best play is having crazy power, as in the Audio-gd HE-9 and manipulating with plugins in FB2K at your will, for your (if) desired filtering. Conceivably you should be able someday to truly duplicate the harmonic pattern of a 300B SET, an OTL, or a crappy car AM radio with Jensen dual cone speakers... no power limitation and total synth. Or run straight & clean. I looked; when you get the MD Airist R-2R, would be interested in what it does with the THX 789 & Elex’s, calm it all down a bit perhaps?
Elex + Cayin HA-1A MK2. Stock tubes and new production Genelex Gold Lion preamp tubes (12au7) didn't match the Elex well, some tracks sounded harsh. Swapped in NOS Mullards for preamps, and Amperex Bugle Boy treble clef EL84 power tubes, and life is good now. All the detail, bass, spaciousness and warmth I could hope for without any glare in the top end.
PrestoCGI have a completely different take on this... The 6XX/650 to me sound dull and lifeless compared to the Elex. I have the benefit of having bought virtually all the headphones (not IEMs, though) I have ever owned this year so my hearing and tastes had not become trained to a particular heaphone's sound signature.
But, if all you have listened to is something like the 6XX, yeah, I can see the Elex sounding bright and taking some getting used to. But, and here are my $0.02, the 6XX/650 are way over hyped. Maybe Elex won't be your thing, but there are a lot of headphones out there. Don't get stuck in a rut.
P.S. yes, I also owned the 6XX (and 660s, and 58X). None come close to the Elex - to my tastes
