DavestefI had hopes there was going to another flash sale and these or the thx 789 would be on it, instead it looks like they just re-upped for the same deals... #sadness
DavestefYou gonna get you some K7XX while they're on sale? If I get some, I'm going to have to figure out the best Dekoni Pads, cause I can't do velour. Any thoughts?
zep483Nah, all the reviews I found suggest they’re a step below the hd6xx and he4xx. And I have both, plus the hd58x, and I just ordered the Monoprice M1060 (on sale for $200). I can’t buy another set of headphones without even receiving the one I just ordered. I’m interested in the edition XX but for that money I’d rather wait for the reviews to come in and maybe get it later. I’ve been running my headphones with a dark voice (tube) and little dot 1 (tube hybrid) amp and I think my money would be better spent right now on maybe a solid state amp (possibly shiit magni3), so a used bottle head crack, or I could just stop buying headphone stuff.
DavestefI myself havent heard the atom. but my unit is on the way and i have a friend who swore by it. I however have heard the magni 3 and honestly not quite impressed by it. It does however provide crazy amount of power for single ended. I'll let you know when my atom comes , im using mr speakers aeon flow open
DavestefJDS labs generally would be a bit more neutral than the magni 3 imo. Looks like the ATOM is peak 1 watt, so its powerful enough,... they're EL Amp is pretty good, and drives things much better than its watt ratting would suggest. Magni 3 peak wattage is 3 watts, so a bit more juice per the stats.
I really like my Archel Pro, which is 1 watt ratting, but at a high ohm, so maybe more powerful ATOM:

If you want balanced the following is also a hell of a deal:

My su-8 dac is running balanced to the P20 and it sounds magical with the 6xx- never heard a better pairing. Its ridiculous its as cheap as it is.
DavestefWhich? I think they'd all be powerful enough to power 4xx and 6xx. I mean I own both and have used them with the gear I have. The only one I cant speak to is the Atom, cause i dont own that one, but JDS 1 watt is usually solid. The geshelli labs is my amp of choice for the 58x though. p20 for 6xx, and i like my bravo ocean for the 4xx (or the centrance dacportable; that one makes the 4xx sound pretty sweet too, even though its a portable thing.
zep483hey how do you like your k7xx? I'm listening to mine right now through a little dot 1+ and modi multibit. I did order a jds atom, but still waiting for that to get here. I kind of agree with the reviews for the k7xx, sound wise its not a refined as the 6xx/58x/4xx/m1060. Not as detailed in the treble, more of a flat sound signature with some bass (not as exciting as the 4xx, doesnt have the precise treble or have as much subbass as them1060, not as pleasing in the vocals as 6xx and 58x). What it does have is the widest soundstage out of all of them. So i think it makes up for its unremarkable sound by having a really wide soundstage, which is really pleasant to listen to. Ive seen some people compare the soundstage to the HD800 (which ive never heard). I can see how they will be good for first person shooter gaming because of the soundstage and imaging.
DavestefIdk, mine have been in Chicago with fedex for over a week... they said they have 10 business days to get it to me, but they're about to encroach upon that soon. I'll let you know when they finally get here :( now I'm debating about the triple drivers for that price...
MegazineI've been going through my music and i notice it on kind of all of them. but if i were to pick one that might be a good example it would be "blue monday"- new order. If you pay attention to the all the extra percussion/synth/guitar fills theyre really faded to one side or the other. and on the k7xx those instruments just seem further one way or the other. its like the k7xx soundstage is to the hd6xx as the hd6xx is to the hd58x. Sigur ros's "Svefn-G-Englar" is a really huge song, maybe that'd be a good one to use too. Or coldplay's "In my place". Band of horses "The Funeral".
one thing to note is that I usually use my k7xx with my little dot 1+, but i need to replace one of the caps on that, so my only amp right now is the dark voice, which isnt ideal for the k7xx's impedance. not sure if the soundstage is different for the k7xx between the two amps, havent A/B'd it.
edit: just got my jds atom in the mail today. I'd say it suits the k7xx better than the darkvoice. some frequencies give me the illusion that i'm listening to loudspeakers in front of me. "ghost" by snakadactal or "space song" beach house for example. the synths at the beginning of each song sound like theyre infront of me. but once the bass and the vocals kick in and i can feel the cans vibrating on my head, the sound shifts back to by my ears.
DavestefI just got them in today. I haven't listened to too much on them. But what I hear I like, so far. The sound stage is wide, but they do lack a certain "sweetness" anywhere. I wouldn't say they aren't detailed, though, I mean, they're not HIGHLY resolving, but a fair amount of detail in my pair. I general, they're very neutral and evenly distributed across the sound-stage and instruments to my ear. Maybe a bit boring because of this, but I can appreciate it. I would say that lack IMPACT, and I think I'm getting a bit more with the pad swap that I've done, but I didn't even listen to them with the stock pads to be honest. Instantly swapped to elite sheepskin dekoni, because somehow the pads arrived before the headphones did... go figure. I'll leave them running over night to burn in and see if my impression shifts. Glad I picked them up though :)
zep483Hd600 is on sale on amazon for $250 in case you need to add more cans to your set up. I just did 🤦🏻♂️ I was waiting for them to go back to $280, so when they went to $250 I had to.
Megazine6xx=hd650
hd600 is it’s own thing.
Hd58x is apparently the hd660 with some foam backing and paper on the back of the driver, but it’s the same driver.
zep483I'd say theyre worth picking up even if you have the 6xx. even more so if you can get it on sale. I'd say they compliment each other well. They both have the sennheiser midrange, but the 6xx have more rolled off treble, and more percieved bass and slightlywider sound stage. the hd600 has more treble, which makes it more exciting for generes like rock/pop/electronic (the dark voice is already has a warm sound, so with the 6xx its a little too warm for these genres). the 6xx is nicer for acousitic/jazz/classical, its warm and cozy. The 58x still has the smallest sound stage of the three id say. It has the most bass. Not as much highs as the hd600, but more than the 6xx.
I'm talking about using them with the dark voice tube amp using tung-sol 7236 power tube and tung sol 6sn7, which is a great combo for the 6xx. The midrange is so buttery, its like it accentuates the vocals even more. havent compared them on anything else yet. haven't compared the two while tube rolling either. Also the hd600 is still breaking in.
DavestefAwesome, I'll have to consider, I haven't committed to a dark voice yet, although I've thought about it... maybe one day. I'm running out of affordable stuff I actually want so... those were definitely on my list.
zep483If you’re in the market for a tube amp it’s a good start. It definitely sounds better after swapping in different tubes. Better as in it sounds like more than what it costs, especially paired with the 6xx.
DavestefMore definition, separation, and improved soundstage/imaging. I won't listen to my 6xx on any other source now... it has ruined me... we will see when I get my 789... although its particular to my 6xx, the 58x sounds bloated on the same set up comparatively, and I get limited to no benefit on the the 4xx.
