Holy mother of fuck
I am going absolutely insane. I thought, throughout my about 3-4 months of owning these, I had heard the worst of that infamous "something stuck in the driver"-squeel. Minor annoyance, not super audible above music and video game audio, just tap the earcups for a while, it goes away after a bit. No problem.
Turns out, I've just barely tasted how ungodly bad this issue can get. Holy shit, is it loud. Holy shit, is it uneven and squeely and obnoxious as all hell. It gets even worse when I tap the earcup, it's been there for more something like three days now, intermittently, sometimes becoming barely noticeable for a while only to suddenly come back at full force. This is causing me physical discomfort. I'm getting headaches, which in turn cause me to develop mild nausea. It's like having a mosquito inside your ear that just starts to get louder and more obnoxious when you try to make it shut up. I almost want to fucking break something just to make it stop, though naturally, 400$ plus import is a powerful deterrent indeed. Jesus Christ.
Can't find anything visibly stuck, I pulled off the earpad of the offending right earcup, just in case, but no, nothing.
Do I really need to ship these back to the U.S. now for repairs? I live in Denmark, so it's probably going to be a tedious experience, and I can only hope the cost of shipping won't be a problem. I love these things, they sound fucking great. They're really comfortable. They would have been a five stars for me if I hadn't been fearing exactly this shit the entire time I've owned them. But boy oh boy, is this issue driving me nuts these days.
And very close to regret.
mmatzenauerIn my case it reacts heavily to me tapping on the earcup, so I'm pretty certain something's stuck in there in my case. Does the noises in your case do the same? Like change pitch or volume, or disappears as you tap lightly on the earcups? If it does, you probably have dust or something stuck inside yours too.
NeoTheLizardIt is very inconsistent. Sometimes it happens only on the right or left side, sometimes on both at the same time. It rarely responds to tapping. I think it is an electrical issue.
NeoTheLizardI returned my first pair because of the squealing and also a faint static noise. Received a second pair but it has the same problem, albeit to a lesser extent. I used to think it was dust or debris on the diaphragm. Right now I tend to think it's actually that the static electricity is reacting to my ear. I think I can even feel the charge building up. The noise is always accompanied by a slight tingling sensation. Usually, simply moving my ear or repositioning the headphones make it go away, though sometimes it returns after a few moments. Having said all that, the vast majority of the time I enjoy the headphones with no issues. It's not a continuous problem by any stretch of the imagination.
Edit: After two months, the issue has gone away. I think it's part of the breaking-in process with these headphones, something about the coating on the diaphragm. If you experience it, I suggest you give it a few weeks. It's annoying but resolves itself with extended use. At least, it did in my case.
Edit (after more than a year): It’s a recurring issue with these headphones, and I have yet to see a definitive statement on what causes it. Everything I mentioned above was just a guess on my part.
