I have a 1st gen nuforce udac. Will this be a better choice than the HD6xx for me? I won't be using any amps that need to be plugged in to a power outlet as I want to be able to move around in my house with the laptop. I have a Philips SHP-9500 which I am very happy with but wouldn't mind getting an extra set of open headphones since I do 95% if my listening on them.

AnjanakrishnanFrom what I've read, the Jubilees fulfill much of the same purpose as the shp-9500, with maybe the exception of a slightly more narrow soundstage. They will probably be close to acting as a direct upgrade of those, with a stronger low-end, little to no sibilance but better overall clarity, and really good imaging. Build quality is decent, but as you've probably already seen throughout the comments, many people initially have comfort issues with the clamping force, which can be mitigated by carefully bending the metal parts of the headband or becomes less of an issue over time as the headphones are worn in. The HD6xx fulfills most of those traits too, but I think are slightly more their own thing in terms of sound signature; they're better for some genres of music, scale better with higher-end equipment, but are slightly less suited for movies and games due to a more relaxed sound signature, so if those things are your alley, that might count a bit more in favor of the Jubilees. I don't have that much experience with amps, but if you don't intend to buy into the whole amp race, the better scaling abilities of the hd6xx might not be utilized to their fullest either way. I don't know how well the udac drives the Hd6xx's. You probably won't go wrong with either, though, as the choice is primarily between flavors, with the Jubilees being slightly more versatile and exciting sounding and the Hd6xx's being slightly more "musical", in the sense that they're better for some accoustic genres, like jazz or classical.

NeoTheLizardI don't play games that take advantage of soundstage and imaging but I think the lower impedance HD58x should be the way to go, even though I do listen to a lot of folk/acoustic music. Clamping force is a concern - that was what made the Ath-M50x unusable for me. The build/durability of the SPH-9500 is pretty good and it is so comfortable that I end up forgetting they are on my head. It's like wearing comfy earmufs. I'd have just gotten a second SHP-9500 as spare if they were still sold at the $50 price point. At $100+ I'd rather spend bit more to get a bit better sound.
