Product Description
Made entirely of walnut, these keycaps from Mechanicallee are a great way to customize your favorite board. CNC machined and finished by hand with boiled linseed oil—which enhances the color of the wood and helps protect it—these caps will last just as long as standard plastic ones Read More
Some of you have expressed some concerns with the caps you received. These keycaps went through the same steps as in the past: CNC, bandsaw cuts, sanding, and finishing as all the previous orders. This process is the same as the samples shown. In fact, the profiling/curve process on the Zebrawood keycaps was improved slightly from the photographs shown by using a new sanding jig that makes the profile smoother and more accurate due to feedback received during the drop.
A ton of work and time was put into the order so it surprised me that a few of you weren’t happy. I was really proud of how they came out. Quality control is very important to me so I’ve spent a lot of time trying to replicate any issues expressed.
It appears some of the orders were cut with a different bandsaw blade that gave an undesirable effect that appeared unfinished. I have corrected this issue by using only 14+ TPI bandsaw blades. As far as fitment goes, that shouldn’t have been affected by this, but I am happy to replace those as well. I will also attempt to document the process that the next drop’s keycaps go through and how they look at each step for transparency. They look quite gnarly up until the end!
Finally: If you are unhappy with your caps, please email me atreturns@mechanicallee.com and I’ll send you a new order using the finer-toothed blades only. I stand by all of my products and I am always looking to improve.
TLDR;
1. Only finer-toothed blades will be used from this point on
2. if you aren’t satisfied with your caps at all please email me at returns@mechanicallee.com3. I will document the process of manufacture, during the next drop, for transparency
The bottoms of the caps are CNC'd. The tops are entirely handmade. Each cap is unique but we've never had any complaints on assymetry or the like. It might be the angle of the photo or the key not being fully depressed. Either way, we'll make sure to achieve as much symmetry as a handmade process allows!
The bottoms are CNC'd and the tops are entirely handmade. Zebrawood requires a more in depth process and is a tougher wood to work with, hence the price difference. Glad you like em!
Here are some pictures from the last batch of the walnut keycaps. I also have the Zebrawood set, I can post pictures of them if there are any requests =]
prashcrHere ya go =] I got both sets because I was worried about the zerbrawood being too tall to use for wasd (they're meant for row 1, and do fit row 1 very well), and they were. Been using the walnut for wasd & they're great, just the tiniest bit taller than row 2 & 3 (which I like), nice texture & they look nice there. Saving the zebrawood set for a six shooter, whenever 1up ends up getting the kits in stock.
so these say row 1 oem profile, but they don't all look the same size? Are these designed for putting on my numbers, or for WASD? I'm looking at the second keycap in this picture.
The size difference would be very small. The walnut plateaus are designed to be an average key height and to work anywhere on the keyboard. Slightly smaller than the tallest keys, slightly taller than the smallest.
BrainFlushThe undersides are coated with spray lacquer to mainly add strength/stability to the stem but it also has the effect of capturing stray fibers -Lee
MechanicalleeI did not know that.
I just recently heard that some wood flakes off. Not from you directly. Just wood caps in general.
Glad to hear you've got preventative measures in place.
skysaberx8xNot a stupid question at all! No, my keycaps are only designed to work with standard, cross stem-only switches. The excess wood is necessary for strength.
lailokenCreating emails for products that are limited can be a good idea, I can relay that suggestion to our marketing team. My concern is that they are focusing more on the drop collab and group buy products rather than the ones that sell out fast from inventory. Let me poke engineering and see if they can create a subcategory that curates all limited time sales in one section so you can be sure to act as fast as possible.
3 months and 2 weeks is how long it took to get these and the quality control is terrible. They are different heights, one of the caps isn't sanded on one edge. Two of the caps have sides that instead of tapering down have an abrupt flat edge for some reason. Based off of the old comments there were issues the last time these were featured but I decided to take a gamble and I lost. I really hope massdrop doesn't bring these back because the manufacturer clearly still can't handle the responsibility.
PlywoodI’m troubled that you weren’t happy with your keycaps. Almost all the finishing processes were tweaked this time around to improve quality, and especially, consistency. Handmade products inherently have inconsistencies, but that is part of their allure. If you would like replacement keycaps, shoot me a DM or email me. -Lee
