I think they are two very different boards meant for different audiences. I own the race 3 and love it, but I'm ready to move to something different, and the nym84 looks like a great bang for the buck.

I don't like any of these switches. It's a kit, I seriously can't order it without switches? The keycaps are optional. Why aren't the switches as well. EDIT: it exists now: https://drop.com/buy/nym84-barebones-mechanical-keyboard-kit

Hari_SeldonYeah, but not (yet) for the June 2019 round. @XiK: Can you please either offer this drop also without switches or make another round of that other "NYM84 barebones drop", too? (I don't see the necessity for a separate drop, fwiw.)
"NYM84 is also outfitted with 16 underglow LEDs to give it more presence." Anyone know what this is referring to? I don't see LEDs in any of the photos.

closetalkingbaldistThey're underneath the PCB which is hilarious as the case is fully opaque.

closetalkingbaldistYou can see a faint glow around the edge of the plate, which is laughable given the solid nature of the aluminum case. If they made another case with acrylic diffuser on the side or bottom, it would be far more interesting.

Uploading a picture of mine from the last time this dropped. It's an awesome keyboard and the case is heavy AF.

dsullivan539T'is the layout that i'm looking for! So it's possible. Did you assemble it, or had it assembled? Edit: sorry, so you assembled it.

EmmanZuluYeah I assembled. I ran into a big problem with the bottom right side. It's totally non-standard so finding the right modifier cap to go next to the up arrow key was an issue. Luckily i found someone on Reddit to help me out. You'll need to find a 2.75u keycap to make this work.

Is it possible to order the keyboard pre-assembled with the three keys left of the spacebar? Or is that limited to the 2 key variant? Also, should this work on a Mac using Karabiner?

themadthinkerI'm also curious if the pre-assembled version can have the three keys left of the spacebar, would prefer to have that kind.

themadthinker"Also, should this work on a Mac using Karabiner?" Should work with or without it. I'm still a couple weeks out from finishing mine (waiting on some upgraded parts), but I might be able to jump a few of the switch contacts if you're interested.

So does anyone know how to flash it? I ordered the fully assembled version but it looks the layout is different than on the photo. I have tried to use QMK toolbox but it doesn't seem to detect this keyboard (or maybe I'm doing something wrong). I don't even see this keyboard on the list of supported keyboards by QMK: https://qmk.fm/keyboards/. Is there any instruction how to flash it or change the layout? Plus, is there any way to switch off the LED lights? There was no instruction or whatsoever in the box.

Thanks a lot, that was very helpful. Works like a charm.

Thanks I managed to figure it out. Bootmapper is easier to make a few changes in than i was expecting. However, i am kind of annoyed that this was advertised as being a qmk programmable board and then getting zero support or instructions from MD as far as actual QmK setup for this PCB is concerned.

ptron3030That is not true. It is a kit where you can choose your layout. You can have a Super/Windows/Command key. Look at the available layout image. I didn't want anyone mislead

If only this was hotswap. Would be a good option for everyone who jumped off the IDO80 buy due to delays.

wrote: "Everyone who does hotswap wants the ability to change switches." That's not what I meant. I meant that some want to be be able to exchange switches later easily, but others want it only because they don't need to solder for initially equipping the keyboard. See @FMK_Volc's reply above. (Of course there are surely also those for which both features of hotswap sockets are important.)

The local fire department as well as State Farm Insurance are both very against me attempting to solder anything.

MD ran a bare-bones drop for this last year and I picked it up for my first custom build. (Search NYM84 barebones - i uploaded some pics of the PCB, final build, etc.) This is a fantastic kit for those getting into custom keyboards. Aluminum case is solid with significant heft, and the anodization quality is excellent. The PCB is busy due to the layout compatibility, but is manageable for novice builders. Like others said, the LEDs are on the bottom, hence do not expect significant glow/lighting benefit once built. Mini-USB is regrettable but not a deal breaker by any means. I actually prefer mini-USB over micro-USB since it is far sturdier. QMK is NOT supported, but bootmapper is very easy to use so don't be intimidated. Once downloaded, I found it easier to use than QMK tbh, but YMMV. The only thing I didn't like about this board is that it is tray mounted. Tray mounting results in typing sound difference for switches near the mount points. At this price point, however, it's hard to complain. You will not find top-mount or better mounting styles at this price range. (Let me know if you find one) I built mine with lubed, clipped, and band-aid modded GMK screw-in stabilizers, and retooled Outemu Sky switches lubed with Krytox GPL203g0 lubricant. I eventually gave mine away to a friend who used a Das keyboard as his daily driver and he loves it. Overall, this is a great board for those new to custom boards. It's also great for those who aren't OCD mech addicts as it far exceeds what you can buy from retail.

Jino74This is a really helpful write-up, thanks! Regarding mounting styles, the XD84 from kprepublic is in the same price range and is top mount.

Chinspikeyes, you're absolutely right! Thank you for reminding me about this - I'd built a XD84 Aluminum case and KBD75 PCB franken-board with gateron yellows and it was a sweet board for about $150 total including switches. I highly recommend this combo for those looking for a top-mount 75% that has some subdued LED underglow. (See my typing video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C95E1P4PhPE&t=5s) For a similar look, I also built a XD84 with bent steel case which was okay, but I did not like the typing sound from the SS integrated plate. For about $70 for a PCB and case with integrated plate, it's hard to complain, however. I recently ordered parts for another franken-board - an acrylic 75% low-pro case from YMDK (Aliexpress) and a KBD75 PCB with PC plate. Total, it was about $110 before shipping. I'll post something on r/mk and a YT typing video at some point.
