I was close to pulling the trigger, but I managed to find a better price: https://appelboom.com/pelikan-souveran-m1000-maki-e-five-lucky-bats-fountain-pen/ Pelikans are a tough sell on MD, not being an authorized retailer and all. For me, a good price is worth consideration given that, mechanically speaking, there really isn't that much to a fountain pen, so the warranty isn't a concern. However an intricate pen like this, no return policy, no warranty, and not even the lowest price?

This is one of the few Chinese centric foundtain in recent years that doesn't seem overly gaudy I like how the bat, also love how they are made with different finishes. but I honestly can not justify the price at the moment..... Maybe when I win a lottery.... maybe.

Honestly, if I had the bucks, I'd be all over this. It's beautiful and it's only going to appreciate in value. Likely, a pretty solid financial investment. As long as you never use it, of course. :P

I have handled a few of the Pelikan Maki-E pens (I am not sure if I saw this one) and they are exquisite in their workmanship. On top of usual Pelikan quality, the Maki-E is very precise and high quality. Maki-E pens of this size typically have high price points, but as works of art, they are wonderful. Be careful of two things though. The first is that this is a big pen and you may not enjoy using it as a daily writer unless you have larger hands. The second is that 1000 nibs run wider, so the medium in these are going to write broader than you might expect.

I happened to see and handle #119/123 this weekend by pure happenstance. I do not care for Pelikans (Pilot and Platinum are my preferred brands, with Nakaya on my "grail pen" list) but make no mistake, the quality of the finish on this pen is amazing.

Pelikan M1000 is, in my opinion, the only Pelikan pen worth messing around. I have used many Pelikan pens and, notwithstanding nib inconsistency, came to the conclusion that the M1000 is the only model that satisfies me completely. The M300 is ridiculously small it should not even exist. Only toddlers will be able to use it. For me, the M200 and 400 are still very, very small. Even the M600 is still a bit small, but the nib on the M600 feels very nice. The M800 is a nice sized pen, but the nib writes as hard as a nail, which I'm not a fan of. The M1000 is admittedly a large pen, but I think it is very enjoyable to use. It's got a nice girth to it and clearly it is a status pen. Not everyone will like it, though, as our hands are of different sizes and some will prefer smaller pens. But for me, it is perfect. Took a while before I got one that writes nicely, though. The nibs on the M1000 can vary significantly from hardly writing at all to sublime. Make sure you buy it from a respectable seller. The high price of this pen is due to the effort and skills spent on this pen. Pelikan had to manufacture most of the parts in Germany and then, for Maki-e pens, send them to Japan to be painted. This can take months per pen and only few people have sufficient skills to create this. That said, it is a very high priced-pen, and is way out of my league, though I understand the skills needed to make even one of these. If I were to spend this much on a pen, however, I would choose this over an Italian or American pen any day. I have heard a number of complaints on pens priced $1000+ that are, upon closer inspection, simply unacceptable (one Visconti has a misplaced logo and the other has faults in the injection molding, for instance.) Not so with Maki-e pens made in Japan. No one, to the best of my knowledge, has complained about the imperfect details on the finish by the Japanese masters who painstakingly paint and polish the pens. It would be a bummer if pens like these come with faulty nibs, which unfortunately can happen. But again, if you're willing to spend this much on a pen, maybe a $500 replacement nib isn't going to be an issue...

Interestingly, Pelikan began producing the M800 and M1000 due to American demand for larger pens. Europeans were just fine with the <600 sizes.

equash1There is another reason for that - Pelikan started off not as a luxury brand. Their pens were only supposed to do the job, which was to write but not necessarily to give ultimate writing pleasure. Later they rebranded themselves amongst luxurious products and it would have been necessary to introduce larger pens to accommodate that goal. If the M600 is their largest pen now, they would be competing with YStudio and not Montblanc. Guess I still have to thank the Americans for making them introduce the M800 and M1000.

Did I miss it??? What is the nib size???? This is one of the buy buttons for a pen lover and Drop often eliminates it from the front page information and details. I went to the buy page as I sometimes find the nib size options there, but did not see it there either.... TN
The nib size is listed in the note: Medium.

I have an M1000 and it is a big, honking pen. Designed for document signature and not for my every day writing. M800 works much better as an every day writer. If you have a large grip and the money to spend....I bet it's a nice pen.

dholik8503I personally am not that into maki-e pens and would rather prefer toledos. But hell yeah, it is so great to just look at it~~

dholik8503That's like just your opinion man. The m1000 is my favorite pen for long session writing as the size and weight are perfect for me. It's on the smaller size of oversized pens which I find ideal.
