Product Description
Known for its durable brass barrel and stainless steel nib that outperforms pens that retail at much higher prices, Pilot’s Metropolitan is the gold standard for fountain pens in its class. Compatible with both cartridges and converters, the Pilot Metropolitan offers a step up from disposable fountain pens that can’t be filled with bottled ink and won’t hold up to continued everyday use Read More
Looking to try fountain pens for the first time? Want a daily carry that won't break the bank (or break your heart if you lose it)? Get the Pilot Metropolitan.
The EF nibs are very smooth and will write on crappy paper without much feathering or bleeding.
The B nibs lay down a good amount of ink and allow for a bit of sheen and ink character to show through.
Only downside is a slightly lower ink capacity compared to other pens in the same class.
Solid construction, great nib, looks good, lots of color choices.
Stop shopping around for a starter pen and just get these already.
The good: These are great-looking pens. I picked up two 2-packs in the recent drop, keeping two for myself and giving two to friends. The pens get noticed and we all receive near-constant queries about where to buy them. The pens write reasonably well, particularly for the price. The fine nib is quite fine indeed (caution should be used on delicate paper to avoid scratching/tearing). There is reasonably smooth ink flow without skipping on the page.
The bad: These are messy. Pretty much every time I use the metro, I get ink on my fingertips. (My friends to whom I gave my extras report the same issue.) It is difficult to discern exactly where the ink is coming from, but whatever the source, droplets of ink end up on the grip and thus on the fingers. I have also noticed that sometimes pulling off the cap (which snaps pretty snugly in place) will cause a fine spray of ink droplets onto the table/paper below. I would suggest uncapping with caution and wiping the grip off with a tissue before use.
I purchased the fine nib. I love this pen and use it all the time at home.
Pros:
Solid construction
Excellent balance and weight
Cap snaps closed securely
Cons:
Nib can be scratchy sometimes
Cap tends to slide off when posted
I haven't tried the squeeze converter, I prefer piston converters myself.
Overall, the value is certainly there; I gave the pen five stars simply because the quality is insane for the price. Great starter fountain pen for anyone who wants to get themselves or a friend into the hobby.
This was my first real fountain pen, and still loving it. If you're stumbled upon this page somehow, this is the best entry level pen I can say. Get it!
They write smoothly and feel quite balanced when in use...and I am a lefty!
