The SE-MONITOR5 and SE-MASTER1 represent Pioneer’s foray into high-end headphones. Featuring a closed-back design, the SE-MONITOR5 impresses when it comes to both looks and sound. It features a 50-millimeter cellulose nanofiber wide-spectrum driver and magnesium alloy for the base and housing, which together suppress the vibration that produces unwanted interference and distortion. Along with two pairs of ear pads, you’ll get three cables: two unbalanced and one balanced. The balanced cable, along with the 40-ohm impedance, makes this headphone an ideal pairing for high-end DAPs. Looking for something even more premium? Each SE-MASTER1 is assembled by a master craftsman at the Pioneer plant in Japan. This open-back model is capable of reproducing high-res audio up to 85,000 Hz: more than double the requirement for high-res headphones. The 3.5-millimeter-thick alloy housing reduces driver resonance and aims for an accurate sound with tight bass and detailed mids and highs.
Note: At checkout, choose the SE-MONITOR5 (base price) or the SE-MASTER1 (+ $1,500). For an additional $260, you can add a 4-pin balanced cable for the SE-MASTER1. This drop is limited to 8 units.
Reviewing the Pioneer SE-MONITOR5, Headphone Review’s Christian de Looper had this to say: “[These] headphones have a lot to offer. They’re well-designed with an excellent build quality, are super comfortable despite their weight, and offer a present, detailed, and crisp sound—one that we grew to love over the testing period.”
