So I’m kinda new to the scene… why do these cables seem so popular with mech enthusiasts? Apart from looking kinda neat I don’t see what the fuss is about.

SchmittABIn my opinion, it is simply an aesthetic fad. The utility is in the quick-disconnect end, meaning that you can quickly change between micro, mini, and usb-c when you want to switch-out your keyboard. However, chances are that if you have a lot of high-end keyboards, you'll shell out for the cables which match the colorway of your keyboard. If you want a cheaper option, you're obviously just going to buy some basic cables that work fine and definitely cost less than $75. People buy these coiled braided cables mostly because they have a good presentation (coil sits horizontal over the keyboard) so an enthusiast can color-coordinate and take their pictures for Instagram and reddit.

YC8 is about $2 to 2.50 straight from China: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32861001672.html $9.99 is the imported upcharge you see from CruzCtrl and others reselling these for profit.

xiaoballThe particular model we use features no branding/engravings and are not sold on AliExpress, although they are in fact from China. They are more than double that cost without shipping and when they're shipped via a fulfillment service such as DHL, add on approx $1,800-$2,200 in additional shipping costs for 350-500LB shipments, this number has even been going up due to global trade inflation. We must also pay the export fees due to the shipment being valued at over $5,000, this is all factored into pricing.

There’s wires and there’s wires. You’re trivializing something you don’t understand. There’s a reason why people buy these and it’s the same reason why people don’t buy beater cars for $500. They either want high performance or good looks, or both. Do you go into the Louis Vuitton store in every mall you go to and “call out” everyone in there for buying overpriced leather and plastic?

Drfeari understand that. i'm just saying 'him' standing outside Louis Vuitton to complain is the same as 'you' standing outside complaining to him. same problem. same action. i know why a wire is $50+ and also why someone might not understand that.
