I have a couple of TOPS knives. Kudos on them for trying different designs. The finish is pretty good too, but damn you pay a premium for what is ostensibly a cheap tool steel. I just bought a very similar knife, from a Russian manufacturer that's using Bohlers new M390 steel, with g10 scales, kydex sheath, and it was cheaper! There are way better deals out there. In fact, for not much more than this, I had a comparable knife made for me, from scratch, with N690c. He even modified it for me, and stonewashed it. Came with hand made colored kydex sheath and switchable belt clip.
I don't have time for 1095 steel. It takes a sizzling edge but you have to keep it totally clean and keep oiling it or it will pit. Brittle.
At least it's cheap--
oops.
PACougYou have to oil it occasionally. I don't mind it getting a little patina on it, but if you are neglecting it to the point of pitting. Well that's just plain your fault, not the steel.
It is an all around respected steel, not recommended for salty environments. All it takes is a little mineral oil and a good sharpening on occasion to maintain 1095.
