Meh. Salomon S-Lab Peak is where its at. Same size volume, better harness system, front pockets for water, barely 400g, more breathable mesh, and cinching system.
Price of this deal is excellent though. Won't find the S-lab for that price.
TeliosI looked at the S-Lab a while ago and really wanted to get it - but I just could not bring myself to spend $225 on it. FWIW, I used the UD FP20 for Grand Canyon R2R with (cowboy) camping gear in it and it was great for running and hiking that.
ryancdennerYeah the price jump is significant and I seriously debated its worth from the moment I saw it at the outdoor trade show.
However, the S-lab range is amazing, it's one of the few 'premium' lines from all the outdoor brands that is absolutely worth the price.
I've never bought an s-lab piece and then regretted it. Whatever research went into designing their breathable/flexible mesh stuff makes it worth it.
It's probably because the S-lab gear is actually designed with huge involvement from athletes. Not some marketing team or product designer without a clue, but the actual people using it.
The fact that I can run for hours with it on and not have an marks or discomfort is a wonder to me.
Nicholas_KnivesI have the newer 35, and it would be tough. There's a foam frame that doesn't really collapse, although I do think it's removable. It also weighs in at close to two pounds, which makes it really heavy for a summit pack.
I have used it for weekend trips by itself, when the objective was to go fast and far, and it performs great under those conditions.
The new 35 adds a hip belt whereas the 30 doesn't have one. I'd suspect the volume on the 20 and the new 25 would be the same. Not sure about the volume of the 30 vs the 35
i bought the 20 on the previous drop and quite like it. Runnable with 10-12lbs. More than that and the movement is noticeable. It is a really
big 20L. I'd say 25. The pack fits my Tarp, down bag, bug bivy, Helium rain Coat monbell ex Lite down. Base top and bottom, neo air xlite large and has room for 5lbs of food.
So if you have a 7lb or so base weight kit it is perfect for weekend trips. I can also fit my BV500 in it.
I don't have experience with the 30 but for me unless you have bulky light gear I don't see the usage case as muh over 15lbs TPW I want some kind of frame.
I've done multiple overnight running / fastpack trips with this (UD30) pack, longest was 3 nights with about 17 lbs. I have taken a large tarp for shelter but no tent, pretty much just pad, bag and food but love the pack, very comfortable. I almost bought another one here just because of price!
