Titanium stales are useless against both vampires and werewolves. I just thought I'd point that out.

You can get these at Zpacks for $2.50 a piece. Or better, get the lighter 5.4 grams shepherd at Zpacks for $2 a piece. They work great, just got back yesterday from backpacking. I use mostly the lighter ones, but I have two of the 8 grams for the vestibules.

Can anyone with experience comment on how these would compare to a “variety pack” on Amazon such as these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FCM4H2Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MdASBbTJEEDNZ
for $35 you’re getting 8 nail type, 4 ultra light (soft ground) and 4 sand/snow type...

OK, I really want the Shepard ones, but I honestly think that their heads would bend when I'll stick them in the ground. Every year I camp near an (inactive) airport runway and the ground there is very tough. Usually goes in a bit, then stuck. Then if you continue, the top bends but it doesn't go further in. Began using big stakes from home depot... as in, not really meant for light camping. These hold, but they're heavy, big and not really travel-friendly because of their weight. Will these hold and not bend? I hate wasting money on something that would just act the same like the previous ones I had.

I agree with djpr, I think the titanium nails would work well for the ground condition you’re describing. I used to use the shepherd hooks, but got tired of bending them and losing them. Now I only use the titanium nails and I love them. Also, I’ve switched to using Dutchwaregear.com tarp hook worms so that my lash-it (or zing-it) stays permanently attached to my titanium nail stakes. No more lost nails EVER! Then you just hook the tiny hook onto your tarp via a little elastic band that gets permanently larksheaded onto your tarp. You tension the line using the teensy hook worm. Quickest tarp set up ever. No knots to tie. And works perfectly with the light, durable, small packing, TOUGH titanium nails!

The shepherd ones are usually easier to insert in tough ground. I used to use the v-shaped ones and had to bang them down with rocks, inevitably bending a few. I now use the shepherd stakes, and you just press them down gently with the bottom of your foot. Btw, I'd get them at Zpacks, cheaper and faster. And you can get lighter ones, only 5.4 grams. I use the lighter ones around the tent, and two 8-gram stakes for the vestibules. If it becomes unstable, I can always put a rock over it, but have never needed it.
