After some inspection, it looks like there was a 47K resistor loosely hanging out inside, with a single resistor slot not populated. There was also a blown IC which is likely used in the power supply circuit; possibly due to that resistor not being in its proper location.
This would be an incredibly easy fix except that the ICs have had their markings sanded off and there is no way to identify the chip to replace it. Rather unfortunate to only be able to have used this for a few hours before it blew up.
