Yard-O-Led’s Viceroy Barley fountain pen is an attention-grabber. It all starts with the handsome wooden gift box, which is fitted with a decorative metal clasp. Inside, resting neatly on a black velvet pillow, is the sterling silver pen, its hand-engraved Barley pattern producing a shimmering effect against the light. Look closely and you’ll notice it’s been numbered and hallmarked, each icon delineating the specific characteristics of the silver. Every Viceroy is truly one of a kind.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have the option of upgrading from the Pocket Viceroy Barley in Fine and Medium, to the Standard Viceroy Barley (+ $50) in Fine. This drop is limited to five units of the Pocket and five units of the Standard.
The pen is fitted with an 18-karat gold nib, which is engraved with this designation along with the Yard-O-Led name. Offering a satisfying click when closed, the snap-closure cap can be posted on the Standard Viceroy without affecting the balance of the pen. At less than 4 inches uncapped, however, the Pocket version—which is available for use with a cartridge only—requires that the cap be posted to deliver a comfortable, balanced writing experience. The contoured pocket clip is also engraved with the company name, while to its left is a polished blank rectangle that lends itself to personalized engraving.
Yard-O-Led has made its home in the much-celebrated Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham—which boasts Europe’s largest concentration of jewelers—since the middle of the 20th century. Comprising only eight employees, three of whom have worked for the company for more than 40 years, this family-run enterprise is helmed by Director Tim Tufnell, whose family ties to the company hark back more than 100 years.
