I just joined but I think an art collector community would be a good idea. I collect art whether it's posters or hat and lapel pins. I can share some of my stuff with you guys so you have an idea of what I'm talking about. Also a hat community or a fashion community or a knife and blade community would be cool.

Mafuka311"Massdrop" means many people ordering the same thing to get a lower price--so it's impossible for unique items like art and collectibles.

Nonsense. If you have a large community trying to get a piece of art then an order is placed just like every other item. I would imagine that not everyone would be able to get the item but if a pre-order was done or an open edition I don't see any reason why it would be a problem. Maybe you don't understand how art or the commissioning of a piece of art is done. Please let me know if you need any definitions. Thank you for bringing that up though. We could actually get more custom artwork made. Specifically for what we want. I know plenty of artists that would love to have a giant order. I can't imagine why they wouldn't. Feel free to discuss any issues you may have with this. I can explain in further detail if needed.

Mafuka311I'm all for more people buying art and supporting artists and no, I don't know how it's normally done. I'd always imagined that each purchase meant that a particular buyer saw a particular unique piece that they liked and then paid for that piece, or else asked that a unique piece be made for them. But I guess if the artist is turning out decorative pieces that look similar or identical, it could work.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. For many of the prints that I have, each design was picked out for use by the musician to use and that is all it will be used for. Ever. The pins I am still getting in to. But for a print, if there is a design that we wanted, by a particular artist, we would commission that artist to do it. If that artist already has something similar they usually will turn it down. If it is just the design that is wanted we would still need to pay for use of the design. Unless the artist has given permission to use it. Sometimes a newer artist will give rights to their design up for others to use in order to gain recognition or something of that nature. It will also depend on the type of material and how it is printed. Many artists now do their own printing due to the art being stolen. Most prints are silkscreen printed which has the least likely to be stolen. Less quality prints are giclee prints and that is still usually done by the artist. I guess it all depends on what we are looking for. And the quality of the print, artist is to be taken into account as well.
