Does the heating base for this kettle use induction to heat the carafe or conduction like a normal hot plate? I'm curious because I need both a pour-over kettle and a hot plate so I can keep my Chemex carafe warm after making some coffee. I can never get it heated right on my gas stove. I know some kettles' hot plate has a central post to keep the carafe centered over the heating element... does this have a post?
TipsyMacScotchslurpenNeither one actually, it has a heating element built into the base of the kettle that makes connection when its docked. Its not just a regular kettle heated by the base.
H82failAhh, ok. Thanks for getting back to me. I guess that's probably how most of the kettles with bases work, then. I wondered about how any sort of hotplate might work without melting the plastic shell at the base of the kettle. I should have realized the possibility of an internal heating element.
I have had one of these for 3ish years now. Use it at least once a day. It is flawless. No rust, no leaks, works great! Super satisfied and do recommend

jdjd4Ditto... though we've only had ours a bit more than a year. Really like the larger 1.7L capacity not for how much it holds we never use it at full capacity, but for how quickly it heats having a higher wattage element than the smaller model. This replaced a simple Hario electric kettle and I've found the Hold function of the digital Bonavita to be indispensable.

Quote from Amazon " This kettle, while nice for the first few months, develops rust and leaks, creating a mess all over one's kitchen counters.
The kettle is not stainless steel, and the kettle will form rust spots wherever water contacts the kettle.
My particular kettle, in addition to rust spots inside of the kettle, also developed rust and a leak at the base of the gooseneck on the bottom where the gooseneck meets the kettle. It leaks EVERYWHERE, and when tilting the kettle it will leak profusely - which is a great feature considering that it is leaking near boiling hot water on you.
I submitted a warranty claim and it was denied despite the clear manufacturing default. I would recommend fully to save your money ($75 or $99) and spend it on a company that doesn't willfully deceive their customers. "

I've used the 1L one every day for a year, also not one spec of rust on it. Also i've worked in the metal industry and stainless can rust, there are many different stainless steel alloys that have different resistance to corrosion. I think something corrosive might have gotten on this persons kettle to make it rust.

H82failI've had the 1.7L offered in this drop for over a year now as well, used at least once day, oftentimes several times more than that as my wife drinks tea throughout the day. No leaks, No rust. Still looks new. Just keeps doing its job (knock on wood).
I have a gooseneck electric kettle (different model.) I recommend them for pour-over coffee. Very easy to control the flow and you can make a great cup of coffee in your Chemex or Melitta.
I bought this a little over a year ago and at 13 months it stopped heating. Bonavita did agree to replace it under warranty. However while not wanting to be without a kettle for a month, I got the Brewista 1.2L kettle. It's $89.99 on Amazon and it's better in every way. The biggest part, I don't miss the 1.7L capasity. I have found 1.2L is perfect for the wife and I. Plus, the 1.2L gives me way better pour control.
84.24 on Prime, and a 1.0L version for $61 http://amzn.to/2G4zHpq
$10 difference in price and you still have to pay for shipping, massdrop needs to either offer a better discount or offer free shipping, at least as fast as amazon, otherwise why would anyone want to buy it from MD??
